Sesame Street Live: Make a New Friend {Review}

January 23, 2014
Can I tell you how excited I was to get an opportunity to review Sesame Street Live: Make a New Friend!?!  So excited!  I received two tickets for me and my son (I decided my 2yo was all I could handle without reinforcements, so the Little Lady had to stay home), and couldn’t wait to introduce him to a live show!

Sesame Street Live is one of my earliest memories.  The show used to come to Minnesota every year around my birthday (December 5th) and my parents took me and my cousins to the show a for a few years.  I remember the excitement of sitting in the seat and not knowing what to expect.  Then, the complete disbelief as I saw my favorite Sesame Street characters in person!

I was beyond excited to experience it all again through the eyes of my son!

Sesame Street Live currently has three shows running right now, Can’t Stop Singing, Elmo Makes Music, and in Minnesota this weekend Make a New Friend

A little bit about the show from SesameStreeLive.com

No matter where you’re from or where you’ve been, everyone is special – so join in! Elmo, Grover, Abby Cadabby, and their Sesame Street friends welcome Chamki, Grover’s friend from India, to Sesame Street. Together, they explore the universal fun of friendship and celebrate cultural similarities, from singing and dancing, to sharing cookies! Join the fun and make a memory with your friends and family!

My little guy and I had so much fun! He loved driving into the city, parking in the garage, and walking through the skyway right by Target Field on our way to the Target Center.

That little guy was excited! As we got our tickets scanned at the door, he proudly announced, “I’m going to Sesame Street.” I was also surprised that he posed with Elmo, since he usually likes to make it difficult for me to get a good picture until I finally give up.

There was plenty of merchandise to buy your little ones, and most of it was unsurprisingly high priced. I did, however, cave and buy the $15 CD after the show – those tunes were catchy! Who can help but want to hear, “Got the Moves Like Bert” over and over again!?! (Can I also just quickly mention the fact that during that song Telly may have done a monster-version of twerking to dance his favorite shape – the triangle!) I figure I now have the perfect tool for dealing with fussy toddlers in the car.

When we got to our seats, I was happy to see how they sectioned off an enormous venue like the Target Center. It looked like any seat would have a great view.

There was a large section on the floor, which I believe are called The Sunny Seats. They are the most expensive, and for good reason! The characters are always in that area! There seemed to be at least one or two characters interacting with the kids at all times, and most of them entered the stage from that area.

I was wondering how my active 2-year-old would handle the 90 minute performance and he did great! From all around you hear little voices commenting on the show, fussing a bit, or singing and talking along. You can also look around and see kids walking in the isles, moving from lap to lap, or dancing at the edge of the seats.

All of this makes you feel completely comfortable when you little one starts leaning back saying he would like to watch the show upside down. It also all seems to fade into the background as you focus on the entertainment.

I’d say it looks like he was captivated!

There is a 15 minute intermission in the middle of the 90 minute show, so there is plenty of time for the kiddos to stretch their legs and the whole show moves really fast.

Be prepared for your kids to use that time to ask repeatedly for the Elmo balloons for sale during intermission. Smart move Sesame Street… There were so many parents shelling out the big bucks for those balloons – I didn’t go for it, but I believe that was a $10 balloon!

The songs were catchy, the dancing was entertaining, the story was cute, and the kids had fun. What more could you ask for!?

It is a great way to enjoy a live show at a reasonable price, or you can spring for the Sunny Seats and really get an experience! Just look at all the characters in that area!

If you are in Minnesota, get your tickets now! The show is running at some really great times now through January 26th!  I also couldn’t believe the great price of tickets – starting at just $15!  You can also purchase a great package with a meet-and-greet with the characters!

  1. This was the best review. I have been wondering two things, whether to purchase the floor seats and if my 2 yr old would enjoy the show. The pictures from your seat were very helpful and it was great to see how your 2yr old enjoyed the experience. I am leaning towards taking her to the show but getting the cheaper seats. When she is older I will purchase the floor seats so she can get more from the experience. Thanks for the tip on intermission.
