No More Water Damage!

May 21, 2013

As I was feeding my 6-month-old and my 2-year-old crept behind and kicked over my full glass of water, I thought about how happy I was that we made sure the tops of our nightstands were practically waterproof.

I take a bottle of water to bed with me every night. I’ve always tried to have a coaster, and I’ve wrecked some cheaper nightstands (which makes me think of this project).

My dad custom built our nightstands and I thought about my dilemma with the condensation from my water. Then it hit me! Why not put a vinyl top on the nightstand? We placed a couple squares of peel and stick vinyl on the top of the nightstand an trimmed to fit.

It looks great! With the black paint, the black top blends in so nicely.

I must admit that all these pictures were taken after I clean up an entire spilled glass of water. I would have staged my nightstand a little better, but it looks a lot better than it usually looks!

Congrats to all of you with the picture perfect nightstands. This is neat for me! 🙂

You might see this at these parties I adore!

  1. Great idea!! I have spilled water on my nightstand so many times… waterproofing it is genius!

    1. Thanks! I always had a coaster and then came needing room for my water and a baby bottle and I couldn’t aim for that coaster in the middle of the night. 🙂

  2. So creative. I take some water to bed with me every night too. I have been known to knock it over a time or two. Can’t even blame it on the kid. 🙂

  3. Wow, I will DEFINITELY need to look into this. I have numerous wood surfaces in my home that I’ve built myself. As a result, I put considerably more value in them than anyone else. I’ve been told I hound my family and visitors far too much about using coasters. This could definitely relieve some of my anxiety about my pieces.

  4. That’s so cool that your vinyl top protects against water damage. I need something like that for my night stand. It seems like I’m always spilling on it. It’s starting to look really old. Is there a place to buy night stands like that?

  5. Hiii…. Buddy!!!

  6. I love wood furnishings but I always worry that they’ll get water damage. Thanks for providing a way to waterproof wood! It’s genius to add the peel and stick vinyl to the wood and then trim it to fit the furniture. You can’t even tell that it’s on there! I will be adding vinyl to all the furnishings in my house!

    1. Thanks Kaitlyn! I’m so happy it might work for you! I was just thinking the other day, as my puddle from my water bottle was huge, how happy I am to have it! I don’t have to worry about a bubbling top on my nightstand. It also looks really great – it’s been so long, I should probably update these photos! haha!

Let me know how it goes!!! Send me a pic or tag me on any social channel – I’d love to see it!
