I was trying to think of a way to keep the kiddos busy this summer as well as help them work on their letter sounds, vocabulary, following directions, and physical activity. So, to give us a bit of inspiration and a jumping off point, I decided to go with a new letter of the alphabet each day. In addition to learning the sounds, practicing writing, and identifying new words, we have an art or science activity, a physical activity, and a snack revolving around the letter of the day.

Lesson Plan

Art: Egg Envelopes

Snack: Elephant Sandwiches

Physical Activity: Elephant Walk

You guys! I was so stuck for the letter E. I don’t know what it was, but it was incredibly difficult for me to come up with activities or anything to do. If you have some creative ideas, send them my way because the kiddos totally got shafted on this one! 🙂 But really, it’s summer, so it’s no big deal and we still had fun!

Egg Envelopes

Supplies

  • Envelopes cut into the shape of an egg, leaving the top and bottom intact
  • Washi Tape

Directions

  1. You can use use any type of envelope you have or you could even take a piece of plain paper and fold the ends up toward the center with a little overlap to make the same type of shape.
  2. Cut the sides to resemble an egg shape, leaving the top and bottom connected for the flaps
  3. Using washi tape, let the kids make stripes across their envelop and fold over the edges to secure
  4. Make sure to leave the top flap open to create an envelop
  5. Using the scraps, make a letter ‘E’ with the tape to place inside

Snack: Elephant Sandwiches

These little sandwiches were a bit of a stretch – I told you I had a total mental block when it came to the letter E – but I think they turned out pretty cute and the kids gobbled them up.

Ingredients

  • Bread cut into a circle using a large drinking glass
  • Sandwich fillings of your choice
  • Round ears – summer sausage, cucumbers, bologna, anything would work
  • Eyes and nose – peppers, olives, carrot sticks, etc.

Directions

  1. Using a large drinking glass, cut a circle out of your slice of bread
  2. Assemble your kiddo’s favorite sandwich – we had ham and turkey
  3. Slice some round ears – we used summer sausage
  4. Make an elephant face – we had peppers on hand so I cut them into rings and slices

 Elephant Walk

This is sure to get the kiddos giggling and acting silly. Teach them how to walk like an elephant.

Elephant Walk

One arm reaches in front as the elephant trunk and the other arm gets tucked under their legs as the elephant tail. If you have more than one kiddo around, have them link their “trunk” to another’s “tail” and walk around the yard. Let the giggles ensue! It is so fun to watch!

What are you doing to stay busy with the kids this summer? Do you have any ideas for me?
