Healthy Moms, Healthy Families: Motivating Mom Rachel

April 8, 2017

There is no way to be a perfect mom, but a million ways to be a good mom.

I love hearing stories from other moms, especially those who are committed to living a healthy lifestyle and raising a healthy family. I’m very inspired by other moms and I love to hear their stories about how they stay committed to setting a healthy example for their little ones and raising a healthy family.

Motivating Mom Rachel: Children learn from watching their parents." (Fit Mom, healthy family, healthy kids)

I couldn’t be more excited about this!

We’ve begun an interview series with some amazing mommas striving to raise healthy families. They are so inspiring to me and I love reading their stories. Our first Motivating Mom is Rachel!

Describe your background as it relates to health, fitness, weight loss, etc.

I grew up playing soccer and practicing Judo which is a Martial Art. While I have not continued with both into my adult years I now run in 5k’s and work out with my husband and daughter.

When do you typically fit in your physical fitness?

I usually fit in a work out during the day or if my schedule doesn’t allow it at night. If I work out at night it will be to one of Popsugar Fitness’s work out videos. If I get to work out during the day it will be running/walking with my husband and daughter at the park.

What our kids see us eating is what they are going to want to eat, and it will affect them throughout their lives.

How do you make healthy eating a priority?

What our kids see us eating is what they are going to want to eat, and it will affect them throughout their lives.  I try and make food based on what I would want my child to eat. Veggies at every meal, meals from scratch, and if we splurge and go out to eat I try and select the healthiest options I can.

How do you get your kids involved in a healthy lifestyle?

Children learn by watching their parents. I try and include my daughter in everything. Even though she is still young if she sees me working out or making healthy food then she will want to join in.

What are your biggest struggles?

Sweets. I have a huge sweet tooth. Haha!

What are your biggest accomplishments as a mom?

Exclusively pumping for almost 10 months after breastfeeding didn’t quite work out.

What are your biggest accomplishments in regards to health and fitness?

Keeping at it. It is very easy as we get older to stop working out. With work and kids time flies during the day. Being able to keep the trend of working out as I get older is big for me.

Set a goal for yourself, start slowly, and celebrate your wins.

Share your best tips for moms who are struggling?

Set a goal for yourself, start slowly, and celebrate your wins. If you’re not much of a runner, but you want to run in a 5k then first set your goal. Select your 5k and start working out slowly. Run ¼ of a mile without stopping for a week then up it the next week. When you hit milestones celebrate them.

  1. This is great! I struggle with sweets too. We keep processed ones out of the house but we do bake a lot. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that in the car the other day I asked my two year old if he wanted to bake cookies that afternoon and he started naming off ingredients – “sugar, “nilla” (vanilla), flour…” LOL.

  2. Wonderful series. Always inspiring to hear other mom/family stories. Completely agree with Rachel that we need to set good examples for our littles.

    1. I totally agree! Although, I admit it was so much easier when they were little and there weren’t so many outside factors! It’s something I struggle with as we’ve gotten more and more lax and need to get back to better habits.

  3. My girlfriend has a child about the same age as Rachel, and I know that fitting in fitness is not easy! But, she wakes up early on Tuesdays and Thursdays to go to her class at the local YMCA and it has made such a huge difference not only physically, but also mentally. She missed working out!!

    1. I’ve always wanted to do that – I love classes! Unfortunately, my husband has always had an unpredictable schedule and leaves really early and I couldn’t find any classes late at night. It’s so great that she found that and scheduled it in – I bet she feels amazing on those days and it makes such a difference!
