The school year is starting soon and before things get too crazy, we’re slowly easing into back-to-school planning. I haven’t gotten the school supplies yet. A trip to Walmart alone is coming soon. However, we have started to think about school snacks and lunches.
We aren’t crazy about the lunch options at our school. I mean, the kids are. They love everything. It’s hard not to when they have chicken strips, corn dogs, fish sticks, etc. It’s like a fast food fix each day. I’ll give the school some credit, they serve the required fruits and veggies. Our kiddos like them, so I’m confident they are at least getting some good nutrition there.
Because of all that, we work hard to make sure the daily snacks we send are nutritious. The school also requires it, as if they are ignoring the fact that a lot of their meals are breaded and fried.

At the beginning of the school year, Mom is on the ball. We are putting together delicious and colorful veggie combos. They have meat and cheese in adorable little containers with ice pack lids. The snacks are fantastic.
Then, just before the holidays, the snacks revert to the same old granola bar each day. The creativity goes out the window from then on.
This summer, while we have the time, we’re doing ourselves a favor with a Back-to-School Healthy Snack List. Before things get too hectic, we’re planning out healthy snacks together. Then, when things get boring, we can refer to the list and get back on track instead of forgetting all those great ideas.
Healthy Snack List
Having a Back-to-School Healthy Snack List in your kitchen, on the fridge, or as part of your command center will be so handy! You can add to the list each time you come up with a healthy snack the kiddos love. Then you can look at it and think, “hey, I can put that together” or “oh yeah, I’ll add that to the shopping list.”
It can be as simple as a sheet of notebook paper, a page in your family planner, a list on a dry erase board. You can even have the cute page I’m using at the end of the post!
Get the Kids are Involved
It’s a universal truth that if the kiddos take responsibility for something or come up with the ideas, they be much more likely enjoy it than if it’s Mom’s idea.
Summer is the perfect time to get kiddos to try new recipes and foods. They can help prepare the snacks and you’ll know ahead of time how they like it. They also can help with the shopping and picking up some new snacks.
I took Little Lady to Walmart to pickup some of our favorite Sensible Portions Veggie Straws. We typically get the larger bag and portion them out ourselves. However, the kids think it’s a special treat to get their own bag. So, she grabbed the 12 ct variety pack. Did you know they have different flavors? It gives them their chip fix while having 30% less fat and better ingredients.
We also tried the Earth’s Best Organic® Sunny Day Snack Bars which we found in the baby and toddler aisle at our Walmart. She loves the apple flavor and these bars are USDA Certified Organic and perfect for kids of all ages.

Don’t forget a note!
What’s a school snack without a cute note from mom?
Along with labeling your kiddos lunch and school supplies with our absolute favorite, Mabel’s Labels, you can also leave them adorable lunchbox notes.
One of the main reasons we love our Mabel’s Labels so much is because they can go through the wash and never come off. Well, these Washaway Lunchbox Notes are the opposite – they’re made to come right off when you wash! How cute is that!?
Don’t forget the Allergy Stickers!
