Motivating Mom Jenn

Name: Jenn Espinosa-GOSWAMI
Number of children and ages: 2 girls, Jade is 13 and Asha is 6
Are you a SAHM, WAHM, or work outside the home mom? I am a newbie WAHM, after escaping 15 years of cube-dwelling

…I was determined to change my entire lifestyle. A year later, I was 100 pounds down.

Describe your background as it relates to health, fitness, weight loss, etc.

I call myself a former fat girl, as I was the rare kid who was morbidly obese. By grade 4, I was wearing a bra, by grade 6, I was in permanent “Pretty Plus”, by high school, I nearly died from pancreatitis brought on by gall bladder disease, and by college, I was on the verge of special order clothing.

Luckily, our family was very active together- from biking and hiking on weekends to impromptu backyard volleyball games and Sweating to the Oldies with mom.

I never worried about health until my grandma Espinosa passed away just before I graduated college. I didn’t know how, since I had never dieted, but I was determined to change my entire lifestyle. A year later, I was 100 pounds down.

I am a big free YouTube workout fan- and haven’t belonged to a gym in years.

When do you typically fit in your physical fitness?

Fitness is my number one stress-reliever. I prioritize my early mornings as the best chance to sweat. When I was working the day job, I was sweating in my basement or lifting by 5:20 AM. Now, I fit in more general activity throughout my day, and save more intense sweat sessions for after my kids are in school or after dinner.

I am a big free YouTube workout fan- and haven’t belonged to a gym in years. My home gym has resistance bands, Dumbbells, adjustable kettlebell, medicine ball, core ball and ankle weights. Everything a fit girl needs 😀

To shake my routine up, I will take a community Ed class or do a Groupon for a new form of movement using more advanced HIIT or lifting tools.

How do you make healthy eating a priority?

As a health coach and mom, simplicity is key. I use a macronutrient philosophy for building healthy meals, and love to cook at home with healthier substitutes for my favorite recipes. I have mastered the art of healthy baking (from gluten-free to whole grain to flourless) and yummy cooked veggie recipes. Since I don’t care for salads or raw veggies, I look for more ethnic and spicy dishes, such as my Hispanic favorites and my husband’s Indian favorites.

As far as priority, I prep food that must be tasty for my kids while still having some healthy component. This means that I might stay up to make food after the kids are in bed, or wake up around 5:30 to prep. My daytime is often booked with meetings and client calls.

How do you get your kids involved in a healthy lifestyle?

I do my best to educate my kids, including acceptable snacks and treats. I encourage them to grocery shop with me, and always keep fresh fruit around.

Plus, we enjoy our weekly farmer’s market visits and have a humble garden 😀

What are your biggest struggles?

I have gone through a lot of personal and family stress in the past year. As a stress-eater, that led to poorer eating choices. I’m less likely to prep veggies for myself when I’m stressed, though I rarely binge on my old favorite junk foods.

What are your biggest accomplishments as a mom?

Does survival count? I am thankful that I can provide opportunities like music and dance class for my girls. Those are things I never got as a child.

There is nothing extraordinary about me, and every woman can achieve body bliss like I did!

What are your biggest accomplishments in regards to health and fitness?

Losing 100 pounds was pretty cool- yet, it never really felt like a big deal for me until I shared it publicly.

In 2012, I was featured in the Christmas edition of First for Women magazine, which has 4 million readers nationwide. I was styled and made up like a celebrity that day.

Every woman should feel that special. That is one of the reasons I started offering product-free health coaching. There is nothing extraordinary about me, and every woman can achieve body bliss like I did!

Share your 3 best tips for moms who are struggling?

1. Track what you’re doing (but DON’T change anything!)

This creates awareness around your patterns

2. Determine where you WISH to be (ideal health, I.e. Body bliss)

3. Identify your biggest roadblocks (I can help with this)

This is the process I walk folks through when working with me, and will serve you for the rest of your life, no matter what age or stage you find yourself in.
