Things can get rough!
Everyone is sick!
For the past month, this mom has been taking care of sick kiddos. First the oldest one was sick. The next week his little sister was sick.
Little Lady had enough of a fever that we ended up at the doctor where they found an ear infection. Thank goodness we went because the next day school was called off for a coming snow storm and Thanksgiving break started early.
We were fortunate to have the antibiotics before heading up to the cabin. However, when we returned home our poor girl had broken out in a rash. Another day home from school and back to the doctor we went.
Of course, wouldn’t you know it, just after getting into the gown Little Lady had to use the rest room. Even worse, after looking over her rash and suspecting it was Fifths Disease, the doctor decided to order a strep culture and urine test to rule out other options.
I knew right then we’d be there quite a while!
So, we headed to the lab and straight to the drinking fountain to fill her bladder again and make the second test a little easier.
Well, as soon as we were called and walked up with our cups the nurse said, “she didn’t just drink something did she?” and we were informed the throat culture couldn’t be taken for another 15 minutes because of it.
Of all the luck!
I’ll spare you the details of our multiple attempts to finish all the tests, but it was pretty humorous. In the end, she tested positive for strep and we finished out the antibiotics and were good to go.
Then Mom gets sick…
Between caring for kids and a household, shopping and wrapping Christmas gifts, and keeping up with the busy season how does a mom even have the time to be sick?
She doesn’t.
Moms CANNOT Get Sick! …but what to do if you do.
It’s unrealistic to expect for moms to receive the care we give our own kiddos when they’re sick. The idea of taking as much time as it takes to rest and recover, isn’t really an option for moms. However, there are some things we can do to take care of ourselves and the ones we love.
Ask for help
It does not come easy to us moms. We try to do it all, and we gladly will give all our energy to our family. However, it’s vital that we ask for help, even in little ways.
Small ways to get a little help for sick moms
- Have someone watch the kids for a little while
- Send the kids’ to a friend’s house and schedule a time to take their kid in the future
- Make a game out of cleaning to encourage the kids to help around the house
- Put Dad on for all meals

Let some things slide
When moms get sick there is usually a whole list of things we’re worried about. While you’re on the mend you need to be ok with letting things slide.
Prioritize that to-do list and find some things to cross off completely. If you don’t, you’re likely to get even further behind as you take longer to recover.

Do we even sleep as moms?
Not really, but it’s one of the most important things you can do to feel better. Sick moms need to place a high level of priority on sleep. It’s a non-negotiable.
This goes along with asking for help and letting less important things slide. When you have the time, take a rest, and don’t feel one bit bad about it.

Cooking is not fun when you’re a sick mom. For one thing, it takes so much energy to plan those meals let alone cook them. Next, being up on your feet and full of germs is not the best combo for preparing food.
