Focus on inspiration as well as preparation
Back to school time can be so hectic. You want to be as prepared as possible, but how about taking the stress out and making it a little more fun?
Mom can totally have a blast getting creative with back to school preparation.
Was anyone else one of those people who LOVED getting out all the school supplies and organizing them for back to school? I absolutely was!
I enjoy being prepared and adore school supplies. Even more than that, I love getting inspired and creative with both!
That’s exactly what we did with our back to school pouches and some help from Cricut.
I am SO excited to share this with you!
If there is one crafting tool that I have dreamed of owning for at least 10 years (yikes!) it’s a Cricut machine. I can’t tell you how many times I have dreamed of a vinyl cutting machine and having some beautiful lettering, labels, and designs to put on all the things.
Now, let me tell you why in all those years, I haven’t taken the leap…
I’m afraid of learning new things.
Yep. I get this almost paralyzing fear of not being able to figure things out.
Same goes for my Fitbit, “real” cameras, and basically anything I feel may be too “techy” – but I did it, guys!
Dream Come True
I have been writing and sharing our family adventures, parenting tips, crafts, and recipes here for going on 10 years. In all that time working with Cricut has been my absolute dream.
In fact, I think I may have mentioned it when sharing our powder room sign and gratitude boards. I now want to re-do both projects!
Not only has my dream of becoming a Cricut partner come true, but I have the most amazing machine, supplies, and designs at my fingertips!
Once these kiddos are fully in school, you won’t be able to hold me back!

Back-to-School
So, the kiddos went back to school on Monday. We met with the teachers last week and it was the first time either kiddo had stepped foot in the school since March of 2019.
Isn’t that insane to think about!?
Since last year was exclusively at home, and many things are different this year with safety protocols, I feel especially driven to have them supplied and organized.

Back to School Kits
This year, I’m going pouch-crazy and organizing all their supplies in individual back to school kits. We’re doing kits for masks and PPE, snacks, allergies, backpack, etc.
We started with a kit specifically for band camp. The kids needed a mask and two pencils, specifically. We decided to collect all his excess supplies together with an extra mask, hand sanitizer, tissues, and two pencils placed in a toothbrush holder to keep everything else clean.
I loved these pouches! However, being a brand new Cricut user, I don’t think I used the correct material and the mesh plastic material didn’t hold very well. I also don’t know if they would have held up well with the iron-on and I was scared to try it.
No matter what, I still have to share how ambitious my first project was and how good it looked! The pouches are a great deal and very cute, so we’ve already used them for other things.

Canvas back to school kits
After brainstorming and a little trial-and-error, these canvas pouches are the winner for creating our back to school kits. I love the nice, lean look and they’re a great quality.
As I mentioned, it takes me a while to learn new things and there has been a little trial-and-error involved, so I went with a very simple, bold letter. I really love the look of it with the simplicity, so that was a win!
Don’t worry! We had a little fun with some color and graphics also, which I’ll share at the end!
With the canvas pouches and simple letters, you can make these kits for anyone or anything. These will work for back to school kits or to keep kids organized for anything from sports to camp to travel. They also work great for adults to keep in their purse, car, etc.
I created five different back to school kits. I hope they help give you some inspiration for your own kits!
Mask Kit
Obviously, this year is going to be much different for us since we did distance learning last year. For our school, masks are required. Our kiddos are so good about masks, with the exception of staying organized!
In our mask kit
- extra mask
- small hand sanitizer
- lanyard
- tissues
- essential oil mask spray for “focus.”
Let’s talk real quick about the most unique thing in this kit. We got a couple sets of kids mask sprays from an Instagram friend you might have met from the Mom Life series. We use the “calm” spray before bed and had to decide between a “happy” blend and “focus” blend. They all smell so good, and what a great idea!
I haven’t decided yet if I’ll be putting one of our cloth masks as the extra mask or a disposable one. I’m tempted to get a few of these fun kids masks. However, we have some regular disposable masks already.
Do you know the trick to get them to fit kids better? Just fold both sides to the middle and tie a knot in the ear straps. Genius!
Allergy Kit
My son has seasonal allergies, but this would be fantastic for any type of allergies.
In our Allergy Kit
- Tissues
- Single allergy eye drops
- Hand sanitizer
- Allergy medication
If you have a kiddo with specific allergies, I love the idea of a lanyard to display the allergy for the first week of school. So smart! These were sold at Target last year, but I got them on clearance and mostly wanted the ribbon for the kiddos to use with their masks.
In this kit we also have individual eye drops, since itchy and watery eyes are what my son deals with because of seasonal allergies. We’re doing our best to keep his hands clean and out of his eyes with this kit.
Backpack Kit
There are certain things I put in the kiddos’ backpacks at the beginning of a fresh school year. They promptly end up a complete mess by about the third week.
In our Backpack Kit
- Pencils
- Bandaids
- Tissues
- Gum/Mints

Back to School Kit for Extra Snacks
This isn’t so much a “back to school kit” as it is this mom’s way of never forgetting a school snack.
We pack snacks daily, but I always like to send a few extra snacks at the beginning of the year juuuust in case we forget. Usually, that’s something easy like granola bars.
Instead of a boring plastic bag, we now have a very cute pouch for extra snacks to keep in their locker.

Period Kit
This is a little premature for my kiddos, but I wish I had done something like this for my step-daughter.
I remember those middle school and high school days. It was a nerve-wracking time and there’s nothing worse than not having enough supplies. It was always also a struggle to keep things handy and concealed in your backpack.
That’s why I labeled this back to school kit simply, Kit. – I think you get it.
Things to put in a period kit
- Pads
- Tampons
- Shout stick or wipes
- Medication
- Sanitizing wipes
- Period panties
- Plastic bag

I think that about covers it for us!
My new 5th grader will also have his pouch specifically for band.
We might do two mask kits so the kids can keep one in their desk and one in their backpack. Or we may choose to put another mask in the backpack kit.
Do you have any other back to school kits you’d create?
Bonus Back to School Supply Kits
Of course, you can create the same type of back to school kit for school supplies.
My daughter already had some of the standard pencil pouches on her supply list, so we got them in a pink and turquoise and added this adorable bunny decal from the Cricut design studio.
My son also desperately wanted to try the video game playing frog design before our canvas bags arrived. So, he got a mask kit with this name on it and another pouch with the relief from the design that I think we’ll use for Nintendo Switch accessories.
See, I told you we played around with colors and graphic!
Cricut Explore 3
Along with this being a dream come true, I can honestly say that this machine is amazing!
The Cricut Explore 3 is gorgeous and extremely user-friendly, especially with the Smart Materials so you don’t even need a mat. It’s also so much faster than I expected!
I had no idea it could do so much! Not only can you do vinyl cutting, but it also has pens and markers for writing, can do foil, and even amazing projects with cardstock.
Yes, it did intimidate me a little, but not the machine. Creating and cutting my designs were an absolute breeze!
I definitely recommend Cricut Access. There are so many designs at your fingertips! Anyone can make something amazing. Get your Cricut Access Premium subscription here!
The rest of it takes some practice. Weeding the little pieces without breaking delicate designs, knowing what materials are compatible with what surfaces, and learning how to use transfer paper and pull it off just right…
I have to say, I definitely recommend going with a simple design to start, because you will soon get the hang of it! These back to school pouches gave me the perfect amount of practice, and I feel like I can’t wait to get started on other projects.
I have some things in mind for our mudroom cubbies, the kiddos desks in the dining room, and even some things just for fun! Imagine what I could have done with our distance learning graduation with this machine!
No worries! I’ll share all of that, and possibly some fun Halloween projects, soon!
There’s no stopping me now!
