It can be tough to find extra storage space in a small house. At times, there is only so much you can do. However, if you get really creative – and you have a little DIY skill – you can find extra space in the smallest homes.
Extra Storage Space
Before moving to our new house a year and a half ago, we lived in a much smaller house. That meant we had to get pretty creative to find extra storage space. But we found it!
We got pretty creative in our previous house. I don’t think there was an inch of space we didn’t use. There were shoe organizers on the back of pantry and linen closet doors. We turned an old laundry chute into a spot for baby shampoo. My dad built extra wall cabinets in not one, but two rooms! We added extra hooks in our entryway. Even our bathroom vanity had a hidden drawer for more storage.
Extra Storage Space in the Walls
One of the most creative solutions for extra storage space came about when we started looking the wall near the kitchen and wondering, what if we could just go right into the wall…
The wall we were looking at was the other side of the bathroom wall. On one side near the front door we were able to make a very shallow broom closet because of the shower on the other side. At the other end of the wall, we were able to go quite a bit deeper and add a few shelves for pantry items.
What a difference this bit of extra storage space made!
In most walls, you should be able to at least get the amount of space as we did with our broom closet. In this case, all you need are 2x4s to go between the studs and a piece of Sheetrock for the back. To make it look finished, add a border of trim and a door.
The hardest part about a project like this is just making sure you have an empty space in your wall. You don’t want to start cutting in only to realize electrical or duct work runs through the space you want your closet or shelves. A stud finder will help, but you also have to use a little detective work to understand where things might run in your home.
This project can be made even easier if you want to just put in open shelving. No need to worry about a door.
You can see from our house, we need a door to cover up our messy storage spaces! We’re not exactly open shelving people…
These photos are almost two years old. I quickly took them before we moved out of our old house, but it sure makes me cringe to look at them and all that mess!
It just goes to show you, if you are running low on extra storage space, you can find it! It’s not out of the realm of possibility to grab a little extra storage space from right in between your walls.
I love how you were able to add storage areas to your home. That drawer in the bathroom is fantastic. I never thought of putting storage in between the studs, but it’s a perfect option for non-bulky items.
