I guess you could say we’re big on gratitude here. It’s such a simple thing to take a moment to appreciate what you have. It also can really change your outlook for the day.
With distance learning, the kiddos have been having some rough days. They miss their friends, learning is a bit more challenging, and they could really use a change of scenery.
So, I wanted to do a little something to encourage them to remember what they have to be grateful for each day.

Starting the day with gratitude
In our house, we have added a bit of gratitude to our morning routine. What better way to start the day!?
A typical morning these days, with distance learning, starts with both kiddos crowding into the bed with me. Then, we head downstairs for breakfast.
Around the same time, the kiddos take their vitamins and supplements.
This week, we’re trying out a new supplement to support the kiddos’ immunity and get a whole bunch of goodies into their bodies. Vita Ginseng Kids is an easy powder you can add to the kiddo’s food, and is available on Amazon.
The kiddos have been adding it to their applesauce, yogurt, or cereal. It’s a good way to get some ginseng, vitamin D, 8 fruits, and 20 vegetable in first thing in the morning. We love that!

After breakfast the kiddos get dressed and start to get things ready at their desks. We have our distance learning setup in the dining room. Each kiddo has their desk with their computers and trays of supplies.

Now, they have a Gratitude Board on the desk too. Once they’re dressed and ready for school, they each add something their grateful for to their gratitude board. It’s a habit we started with our Gratitude Attitude WayBetter games. It’s a fantastic way to start the day!

Gratitude Boards
Because I wanted the kids to remember something they are grateful for each day, and at moments when they need it the most, the plan came about to make an easy Gratitude Board they could keep right at their school desks.
Believe it or not, this is a project I had been working on since before they started school for the year. The fact that I’m sharing this now will tell you how that first attempt went.
The first plan was a little more complicated with two boards that hang on the wall, and one that is removable to write down their daily gratitude. I actually got all the pieces and then got hung up on what to use to make the chalkboard or whiteboard finish.
The easier the better!
Fast forward to a few months later, and I came up with an idea that was a whole lot easier.
I know we can all appreciate making something as simple as possible, can’t we?
Inspiration struck, and these easy Gratitude Boards are just made from little easels that come in chalkboard or whiteboard from the Dollar Tree. You can’t beat that!
If you like a chalkboard look rather than a dry erase, there are plenty of those to choose from too.
You can also find a larger white board on Amazon. You can even find a very inexpensive set of 20 small blackboards. I also absolutely love the rustic look of this desktop chalkboard too. Such a cute option!
Making Gratitude Boards
This project is so simple!
All I did was buy the two dry erase easels from the Dollar Tree and use Sharpies to write, “I’m grateful for” at the top. You can write what I did or “I’m grateful…” – whatever you like best.
This will look gorgeous if you have some hand lettering skills or are lucky enough to have a Silhouette or Cricut machine to make some gorgeous letters.
Gratitude Board Pro Tip
Now, I will say, this will work fine and will likely work even better on a chalkboard surface. However, with the dry erase, you might want to give it a light sand, write with your marker, and maybe even give it a light coating of something like ModPodge.
We’ve been finding that if the kids write over the permanent marker with the dry erase marker and then wipe it clean, the Sharpie will come off. I don’t think the same would happen on chalkboard, or if you took a little time to rough up the surface and seal in the marker.
However, with a quick project like this, it doesn’t hurt to just give it a try and fix as needed!
Daily Gratitude
There are so many benefits to starting your day with gratitude. Our kiddos’ world is pretty upside down right now. It’s nice to take that time to start with appreciation for all we have.
It’s also so fun to see what they come up with! My son has written a simple “my toys” most often, but my daughter is coming up with things like “the sunset days” (I’m not sure either, but it’s sweet) and “all being together.”
