Happy Valentine’s Day!

This year, with distance learning, we need to get a jump on our Valentines. With material pickup every other week, Little Lady’s teacher needed us to have the valentines left at the school before February just to get them gathered and redistributed in time.

My son, however, hasn’t heard a word from his teacher about whether they will be doing Valentines or not. Just to be on the safe side, I ordered enough for both classes.

Non-candy Valentines

Each year, we try to get creative and think of something fun for Valentine’s Day that is outside the box of normal candy valentines.

We have nothing against candy valentines in this house. However, I really love the chance to get creative and think of something all the children can enjoy. Non-candy Valentines ensure that no one is left out.

It’s also just so fun to come up with something new that the kids may have not gotten before!

In the past, we have tried quite a few different non-candy valentines.

This year, we’re going with some colorful reusable straws for our Valentines. I don’t know why straws are such a fun things for kids but, believe me, they are a hit! My kiddos are already placing dibs on the extra colors.

Just like overdone pencils, straws also make it easy to attach a card and haul them in to school.

In our case, we printed a quick and easy set of valentines and with only two cuts, they look so cute on the straw. I love them.

One of the best parts about Valentine Straws is that they can be purchase pretty inexpensively.

These solid-colored straws and these colored swirled straws are the best value I found for around 50 straws. However, an even better value is the set we picked of 100 striped straws. The kids thought these were a little more fun and I knew we’d have more than enough for the two classes and extra for home.

Another great option are these beautiful multi-colored metal heart-shaped straws! The heart shape is so perfect! Another fun option is heart-shaped crazy straws. Although, I specifically chose to not go with crazy straws because I find them almost impossible to fully clean since they’re often not dishwasher safe and you can’t clean them with a brush or easily air them out.

To attach the straws, there are a couple options.

First, you can do like we did and just use a craft knife to cut a small slit at the top and bottom. This is probably the easiest option. You can stack a few valentines, square them up, and the sharp knife will cut through a few at a time. A cutting mat is also super handy. Then, just slip the straw through each spot.

If you don’t have a craft knife, you can use scissors. You’ll just have to give the paper a slight crease, but it will look just fine!

Last, you can use a hole punch at the top and the bottom. This is what I tried first, but the reusable straws are just a touch big. So, if you go this route you’ll need a couple holes or use a larger hole punch or craft punch.

If you’re looking to have the whole thing done for you, there are a lot of great valentine straws on Amazon!
