I can’t believe it has taken me this long to share my favorite project ever!

When I was in grad school – ten years ago now! – I worked with kiddos with autism. Part of our behavioral therapy was to get the kids together for projects and work on social skills training along with their other goals.

One of the projects I came up with were these Bubble Towers.

I’m sure I found the inspiration somewhere at the time… I can’t find anything exactly like these anymore which leads me to believe I must have altered them or come up with my own version.

What we did at the time was break each activity down into very specific steps to include the kiddos’ goals. Usually, that involved requesting supplies and following one or two step instructions.

Bubble Towers are something we made a couple of times and the kids loved them!

We also make octopus hot dogs and I DO make these for my own kids all the time!

Can you believe I’ve never made Bubble Towers with my own kids? I think I may have when they were younger, but I don’t think they remember.

The excitement of making them and watching the bubble towers go higher and then tip over was pretty fun to watch!

One of the best part about these Bubble Towers is that they are so easy to make. It becomes part of the fun for each kid to assemble their own bubble tower.

Also, the supplies are things you can probably find around your house.

Assembling Bubble Towers

  1. Using the hole punch, place a hole in the side of the cup as low as possible
  2. Cut a straw into 1/2 or 1/3 and place the end in the hole. If needed, use a small piece of tape to secure
  3. Cut fleece to slightly larger than the top of the cup, leaving almost a 1/2 inch extra
  4. Hold the fleece in place with a rubber band

Bubble Towers are so easy to make!

This is a great project for classrooms or groups because the materials are inexpensive and they are very easy to make.

Almost any size cup with work. We use small, plastic bathroom cups because the plastic doesn’t get soggy from the bubble solution and the small size is easy to cover with a scrap of fleece.

First, punch a hole in the cup, going down as far as the hole punch allows.

Next, place a piece of straw into the hole. We cut our straw into thirds and it was a great size for our three Bubble Towers.

In the past, the straws have been the same size as the hole and fit well. This time our straws were a little small. So, we used a small piece of tape, and cut an X in the center so we could pull the straw through and attach it to the cup.

Then, cut a piece of fleece slightly larger than the top of the cup. You need enough excess to be held down by the rubber band, but not so much that it gets in the way of the straw.

When you secure the fleece with the rubber band, you’re done. So easy!

Now comes the fun part – making those bubble towers!

Add a bit of bubble solution to a shallow dish. Place the fleece face down in the solution until just wet.

If it’s too dry, your bubble towers will be too airy and not climb very high. If your solution is too wet it sometimes drips into the cup and seems a bit too soggy for good bubble towers.

Blow slowly and the tiny bubbles will build up and up until they tip over. You can also face the fleece down and make large snakes.
