This is our bathroom when we moved into our house in 2009. Notice that awkward white square on the middle of the left wall? The laundry chute.
If you have one, do you use it? When we first looked at this house I thought a chute sounded like a great idea to get our laundry down to the basement. However, when we got to the basement we realized that chute dropped down to the opposite end of the room from where the washer and dryer were. Who planned that out?
We eventually added a bathroom downstairs rendering the already useless chute a completely useless hole ending at basement ceiling. We didn’t do anything with the black hole until the day I was pretty sure my little guy (probably about one at the time) opened the door and dropped something in, never to be returned.
The bathroom was our last room to update and that was the time we decided to revamp the old laundry chute.
We jazzed up the looks of it with a little paint.
Check it out now! Storage for the baby bath supplies!
All we did was measure the hole, construct a wood box to wedge in the hole, and there you go!
With an insert that wedges into the hole we turned the old useless hole into more storage! Always a good thing!

What a great idea!! I’m pinning it. I lived in some rental places with laundry chutes, but we never used them and resented the lost space. We had the kind that ended about 3 feet up into the top floor, with the door on top, so we could store stuff on top of it, but it was still a chunk out of the corner of the room and a total loss on the first floor.
Thank you! It’s such a simple solution and we can actually store quite a few things in there!
Such a great idea! I always thought having a laundry chute would be so helpful, but only if it’s in the right place. We’ll be featuring this over at Someday Crafts tomorrow, so come check it out if you have some time!
How sweet! Thanks so much – I’m honored!
