June 17, 2015

We all have those things that we get obsessed with every so often. For me, each time our finances changes, I scour Pinterest and start adding to my $ Stuff board.

I’ve been through tons of posts regarding ways to save money, and I’ve narrowed it down to…

50 of my absolute favorite Money saving Tips

50 of the BEST Money Saving Tips I’m jumping right in. Here is a list of 50 of the Best Money Saving Tips that I’ve found from all the articles I’ve read. This list is mostly for me and hopefully it will help you too.

50 of the Beat Money Saving Tips

Laundry

1. Install a clothesline outside and stop running the dryer.

2. Use the Rapid Wash setting on your washer (I didn’t even know about this)

3. Make your own laundry soap

 4. Wash in cold water

5. Use dryer balls to decrease drying time

Energy Savings

6. Turn off the tv as often as possible. We typically have it on in the background and no one pays attention.

7. Cover vents and close doors to rooms that don’t need to be heated or cooled.

8. Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) can help subsidize utilities

9. Change ceiling fan direction: clockwise in the winter and counter-clockwise in the summer.

 10. When cooking, turn the oven off just before the food is done and let it stay in the warm oven until finished.

11. Turn down the temperature on your water heater.

12. Install a programmable thermostat. We have one, but we’ve never figured it out, so it may be time for a better one.

13. Ditch the garage fridge. It runs all the time and is probably older and not energy efficient.

14. Put the majority of electronics on tracks to easily turn off when not in use.

15. Go to bed earlier. You’ll save money on electricity and possibly late night snacking.

Spending Smarter

 16. Sign up for the Victoria’s Secret mailing list for free underwear

 17. Home Haircuts. We’ve tried this and we were really bad at it. I wonder if I could find a good kit to make it easier on Craigslist or at the Goodwill.

18. Find a good Money Savings book at the Goodwill. Our Goodwill marks certain books down to $0.20 at the end of the week.

19. Make a list of things to be on the lookout throughout the year for things to buy used instead of new

20. Ask for discounts. You never know! I read about someone getting a discount from their preschool for paying in full. With two kiddos and $300+ preschool payments each month! this could be huge for us.

21. Create a price list on your phone, so you know when something is a good deal.

22. Buy a reusable furnace filter for a one-time fee and wash it instead of buying new.

23. Apply to store savings programs. I use a separate email and never check it unless I’m at about to make a purchase and then I check my email for deals

24. Shop untraditionally. We find some amazing food deals at Menards and Big Lots, and have found lots of great deals for non-food items at Aldi

Challenge Yourself

25. Pantry Challenge. use only what you have in your pantry to plan meals, get creative!

26. No Spend Challenge. I tried to go a month, but I think I would definitely do it for 2-3 weeks again. I loved it!

27. Pay Yourself Challenge. There are many guides out there (I found a bunch on Pinterest) for putting small amounts of money aside each day and eventually ending up with big savings.

28. Change Challenge. Put all your change aside at the end of the day and watch it add up.

29. $1 or $5 challenge. Put all your singles or $5 bills aside at the end of each day.

Make the Most of What You Have

30. Repurpose kids clothes. (Boys shorts to girls skirt, etc.)

31. Sell on Craigslist, eBay, or hold a yard sale

32. Find ways to make some extra money: Etsy shop, Fiverr, etc…

33. Save and recycle cans. Maybe it’s not worth the effort, but we just toss them in the recycling anyway and every little bit helps.

Save Water

34. Displace water in the toilet tank with a pop bottle

35. Flush less often. Pretty gross, but I have a little one potty training and we don’t really need to flush each time we clean a tiny potty

36. Displace water in the tub. All those toys in your kiddos’ bath are a good thing and help use less water.

37. Run a full dishwasher. Running the dishwasher when full can actually save money over handwashing or rinsing and scrubbing that my husband does.

38. Save your clean(ish) water. We refill water bottles around here all the time. Many times there is a little left in the bottle that gets dumped out for some fresh water, but it is perfect to take a moment and dump it into a plant instead of the sink.

Other Good Ideas

39. Finish potty training and finally be done with diapers

40. Tell friends and family to use my amazon links. I’ve been an amazon affiliate for a while no, but I’ve never just thought to tell my friends and family to use my link when they make purchases

41. Check over all bills for extra charges or hidden fees

 42. Cut cable. Check into Roku, Hulu, Netflix, etc.

43. Check into generic prescription savings at Costco

44. Combine insurance for savings

 45. Check into discounts on home insurance, taxes, utilities, etc.

46. Find a Budgeting App, and use it!

47. Paying one extra mortgage payment a year can really add up.

48. Channel your grandma and start saving free condiments.

49. Use your library. You can find free books, movies, and even activities.

50. Check the curb. We have a neighborhood garbage pick up and anything goes. Most of the time it gets picked up from the curb long before the garbage touch gets to it. We’ve found some awesome treasures: Power Wheels Jeep, working crystal lamp, riding lawnmower, vacuums, chairs, leaf blowers, etc.. It’s insane! If you’re handing at fixing or refinishing, it’s a goldmine!

  1. I’ve been doing a Thrifty Thursday post once a month, and some “fit&frugal” posts. I’ve been saving SO much linking my Fitbit to Fitstudio (a rewards program giving store credit at Kmart/Sears) and Achievemint (just redeemed my latest $50 award, as did my dad and two boys). Walgreens rewards and Pact earn me money for my steps and such too.

Last week I posted about Amazon Prime, I’ve posted about the library and gas discounts … and I do make my own laundry soap! 🙂
