Spy Party: A Secret Agent Party they will never forget!

This Spy Party was the BEST time for all of us! It took some creativity and some planning, but it worked out better than I could have ever hoped!

During each mission I kept turning to my husband and saying, “they’re so into it, they really like this!” It was one of those times when everything went off without a hitch and couldn’t have worked out better!

Even our timing was spot-on. We planned 2 hours for the party and finished up with cake with only 5 minutes to spare. Just as kids were starting to run crazy all over our house, the parents arrived one-by-one.

Success!!!

The most important thing to setup are the Mission Envelopes. Our envelopes – and so many other things for this party – come from the Dollar Tree, We had more than enough for our 7 missions.

It also looks really fun if you have a Top Secret or Confidential stamp to use.

You can hand-write each mission like we did or type them up in an official-looking font. We used some construction paper the same shade as the envelopes.

Also inside the envelops, we placed any materials needed for the mission and a piece of the last clue.

Spy Party with 7 Fun Missions

Mission 1

By placing all the mission envelopes in the entryway, we had a good central location to keep going back to. The boys opened the envelope and took turns reading each mission.

Dress the Part

All great spies must have a disguise.

Your disguise is hidden in the spy vault. Make it through without touching the lasers and you will be an official spy!

Find the free printable mission here.

Set up:

Using yarn or streamers, string them back and forth along a small room or hallway. Place the disguises at the end of the laser maze.

Our original plan was to do this mission under the trampoline in the backyard. However, we had a rainy day and everything needed to be done inside.

Our front room has two doors and a large entertainment center, so it worked well for having a start and finish and plenty of places to attach the yarn.

It’s so much fun to watch them crawl under the lasers and cheer each other on. Once they make it through, it’s a great time to snap a picture with their disguises!

We got simple mustaches and black hats from the Dollar Tree. We love these hats – I also get them before chaperoning group trips – so handy!

Make sure not to remove the laser maze too quickly if you don’t have to. It’s almost guaranteed they will want to go back through it again!

Mission 2

Spy Code Name

Every spy needs an alias.

Use the formula to discover your secret spy name and identification number.

Take it to fingerprinting to receive your Spy Badge!

Find the free printable mission here.

Set up:

  1. Create a code for the spy identifications numbers. Simply write the alphabet and number each letter.
  2. Write spy names on small pieces of paper and put in the mission envelope.
  3. Set up an ink pad or fingerprinting kit.
  4. Last, it’s fun to give each kid a small spy notebook to write their code names in.

Spy Name Ideas

  • Silent Fox
  • Red Claw
  • Sly Diamond
  • Green Arrow
  • Blue Steel
  • Midnight Moth
  • Swift Sparrow
  • Time Bender
  • Blood Falcon
  • Laser Eye

As the secret agents read this mission, it’s a good time to give them little notebooks and pens or pencils. We wrote on the first page so they knew where to add their spy name and number.

After each spy discovers their code name and cracks the code for their spy ID number, write it on a name tag to create their spy badge. With ink, add their fingerprint as well.

Mission 3

Dark Secrets

We found a secret letter. The item to help you read the letter is hidden in the dark.

Use your glowsticks to find something to help crack this code!

Find the free printable mission here.

Setup:

  1. Create a secret letter, called a Scytale, by wrapping a long strip of paper around a paper towel roll. Place an arrow on the end of the paper towel roll and a matching arrow on the top of the strip of paper. Write your message across the paper – “Bank Robbery!”
  2. Place the letter and some glowsticks in the mission folder.
  3. In a small room that can be completely dark – we used our mudroom – place the paper towel roll and other items as a distraction.
Spy Party Mission 3 scytale

This is one of the missions where the kids have the most fun! The giggles from inside that dark room were so precious!

We placed all sorts of items around the room: random toys, bags, fake money, etc. The funniest part is to leave some other long strips of paper with things like “fooled you” and “not it” written on them.

Our troupe needed a clue to look for something else with an arrow to help them figure out what the letter said, but they figured it out pretty quickly after that.

The funniest part was just as they were figuring out the code a loud siren went by the house. Just a moment later they figured out the code, “bank robbery!” They even asked if I made the siren happen!

Mission 4

Bank Robbery!

The bank has been robbed!

Bombs have been left behind with clues to your next mission.

Detonate each bomb to retrieve the money and find the clue to your next mission.

Find the free printable mission here.

Setup:

  1. Fill black balloons with all sorts of miscellaneous items: fake money, fake clues, etc.
  2. Make sure to include a invisible ink pen (or black light) and paper with the clue (“your next mission is to find your goody bags!”) and other messages written in invisible ink
  3. Also include “Evidence Bags” – or ziplock bags with “Evidence” written on them
  4. If you’d like, disperse some toothpicks around for easier popping

**This is another one that would have been fun outside. I had planned to have all the balloon popping happen in the trampoline, which would have been pretty fun and a lot more active!

This is such a fun one! Who doesn’t love popping balloons?

Since the clue is written in invisible ink, it make take a while for them to figure this one out.

Our kiddos were grabbing all the money and even got tripped up with a fake clue that had the same code of the spy ID numbers, but ended up saying, “not it.”

With enough dummy clues, each kid will get a chance with the invisible ink pen.

Mission 5

3 Lock Boxes

Three lock boxes are hidden in the next room and clues are all around.

Use your EVIDENCE bags to collect your goody bag items as you unlock each box.

Find the free printable mission here.

Setup:

  1. Place 3 different lock boxes around a room. You can also just use suitcases with locks, bike locks, etc. and get creative.
  2. Fill the boxes with goody bag items for them to collect as they open them.

We happened to have a clock with a hidden compartment and a book safe, and I grabbed a money box with a key from the Goodwill.

The hardest one to figure out is the combination lock, so we gave them 2 clues in the room. The clock with the hidden compartment was set to 2:55 and the message board also read, “Spy *Time*” with 255 hidden in the characters in the bottom line.

The kids found the lock box first, but needed to find the key. Then they noticed the book, but needed the combination. Last, they found the goodies in the clock and we gave them the clue that it was also an important clue.

One kiddo figured out the time on the clock and they tried the combination lock and found more goodies. Also inside, was the key to the lock box, so they got everything and we were ready for lunch.

Mission 6

Where’s Lunch?

Rival spies have stolen your lunch.

Search the area for clues and the secret password to get it back!

Find the free printable mission here.

Setup:

  1. Set your table ahead of time and place the letters to your secret password on the back of plates and even under cups, napkins or forks.

We used black plates, napkins, and forks from the Dollar Tree. For the table cloth we used one white and a folded red piece down the middle.

Another fantastic idea is to pickup the small 3-packs of water bottles from the Dollar Tree and each kid can have one to take home. We even wrote their Secret Agent names on them.

If you’re having pizza for lunch and you have 5 kids at the birthday, you can use each plate and spell out, “pizza” like we did. It was so easy, but still took the kids a little time to figure it out.

Everything up to this point took just a little over an hour, so we were ready for some easy missions and food!

Mission 7

Mission Completed

Put all the clues together to find out how to solve the mission and receive your Birthday dessert.

Congrats Secret Agents! Mission Accomplished.

Find the free printable mission here.

Setup:

  2. Cut into pieces – one for each mission – and place them in each envelope to collect as each mission is completed.
Spy Party Last Mission with all the clues

Find the free printable final mission here.

Once the kids put the pieces of the puzzle together, it’s time to light the candle and sing Happy Birthday!

This is definitely a party that is so worth the effort! It was so much fun and the kids really got into it. I loved every minute of it too, and the birthday boy is still talking about it days later!

What more could you ask for?

Maybe 2 bonus missions (ok, possibly 3 but you’ll just have to see for yourself.

  1. Wow, these ideas are fantastic. Being a full time Children’s Entertainer I am always looking for party food/decoration theme ideas to share with my clients and parents on my Facebook page.

  2. As a mom and a party organizer, this spy themed party idea of yours really brings party games to a whole new level. I love how creative it is and children and adults can play with each other. A successful party to me is where everybody participates and everybody leaves home happy. Thank you for this!

  3. I LOVE these ideas!!!! Thank you for sharing. However, I am getting confused about the letter in the paper towel roll. Can you share an image? Is this hidden in the dark room or is this given to them in the mission envelope?

    1. Hi Katy! Thank you so much!

I wish I had a photo of that clue. I missed out on a lot of photos while the party was happening because there was so much going on! I totally understand how it could be confusing, and I’ll try to take a picture of it and add it in.

What I did was have a bunch of items in the dark room as a distraction. Also in there was a paper towel roll with an arrow at the end. Then I had a very loooong strip of paper with another arrow at the end. If you line up those arrows and wrap the paper around the roll, you can write your clue across where each part of the strip lines up to create a secret message. It’s a tricky one, but very creative and fun! I’ll let you know if I’m able to get a photo and add it in!!

      1. Thanks, a photo would be helpful. I’m obviously a visual learner 😆. My daughter is so excited for her Spy Party!!

  4. I have organized so many themed birthday parties but never had an idea of spy-themed birthday party and if think of doing this party, the main question will come that how to execute it but you have explained it very well that anyone can organize it on their own and it will engage the kids during the party. I will surely organize a spy-themed party.

  5. Oh wow! Thank you so much for sharing this. I am totally going to utilize this for my son’s 8th birthday! As soon as I mentioned he got so excited, this is totally up his alley.

    1. That is so great!! He’s going to love it – I couldn’t believe what a great time the boys had with it! I wish I could remember the 8th mission I had in mind – then you’d be all set. If I remember what I was thinking, I’ll let you know. Thanks again, Lauren!

  6. This post was so helpful! I threw my son a spy themed party this past Saturday for his 5th birthday. I used all of your helpful tips and the party was a complete success.

  7. My son and I are so excited to try this for his birthday! Thanks so much for sharing! One quick question, what did you use for the kids to decipher their spy number? I get the number alphabet part, just wasn’t sure what they used to get the number.

    1. Hi Brooke! I’m so excited you’re going to do a spy party. It was so much fun for us!

We used their names to come up with the number code. For the code pictured, the child’s name was Ray. That was probably the shortest code – some kiddos had 7 or 8 numbers to find.

I would love if you share with me how the party went! Either here or tag me on Instagram or Facebook – it would make my day!

  8. I ‘ve read about so many birthday party themes but never heard about the spy-themed birthday party. The set up which you have done is so good and I loved it.
