Is there anything easier for a kid-favorite lunch than a hot dog?
Of course, if you’re anything like me, you never have buns when you need them.
This quick and easy “recipe” is a great way to get the kiddos involved and have a kid-pleasing quick lunch.
Toastie Dogs are made from wrapping a piece of bread around the hot dog and toasting – oh shoot, I just gave away the super complicated Top Secret recipe… – so easy!
One of my favorite school lunches, next to the questionable but oh-so-delicious chicken burger, was Toastie Dogs. There was something about covering the hot dog with that crispy toast and sweet ketchup that was so much more exciting than a traditional hot dog in a bun.
In school, they must have spread some ketchup on either side of the bread and gave it a roll and called it a day. I did it a little different when making it for myself, and we did it differently again when I wanted to get the kiddos involved.
Toastie Dog: The Easy Way
- Wrap hot dog in one slice of bread and secure with toothpicks
- (Optional) Add a small amount of ketchup to the inside before rolling and to the top to caramelize as the bread toasts
- Cook in the oven or toaster oven, seam side down, at 350 for 5 minutes
Toastie Dog: The Fun Way
- Give the kids a slice of bread and a rolling pin, bottle, or glass and let them roll the piece of bread until it is flat
- Let them add a few drops of ketchup to the inside of the bread
- Roll the bread around the hot dog and secure with a toothpick
- Spread a bit of ketchup on the top of the bread
- Cook in the oven or toaster oven, seam side down, at 350 for 5 minutes
Assembling without flattening the bread gives it a great crunch for adult, but rolling the bread helps eliminate the hard crust for the little ones. Either way, it is one delicious and easy way to eat a hot dog!

That was my favorite meal when I was in elementary school but we called them Weiner Winks…probably not the best name for a meal, now that I think about it! I made these awhile back one evening when I needed something fast for dinner and we didn’t have buns. My husband thought that these were the best thing since…well…sliced bread! 🙂 I usually wrap a slice of cheese around the hot dog too! Yum!

“Weiner Winks” I love it! I never have buns on hand when we need them. I usually cut them into an octopus for the kids since they don’t care for the bun anyway – that is a fun one!
