How many times can I say what a crazy time this is? It’s a different world and we are all adjusting.
One of the best things to come out of this is to see everyone’s creativity and caring responses to having to social distance.
We have wonderful neighbors across the street who treat us like a surrogate family. They wheel our garbage up the driveway after it is collected, they think of our kids every holiday, and they send over all sorts of treats!
This last time we got a plate of our favorite dessert, it had a note, “Made with love, a mask, and a glove.” How sweet is that!?
We are always looking for ways to show them how much they mean to us. We finally came up with something that works for social distancing!

Cactus Gift for Social Distancing
This is a fun and cute way to let your neighbors, friends, and family know you care. Leave them this easy painted rock cactus, adorable Air Hug card, and Cactus Juice hand sanitizer. They will love it!
Since we can’t be close or give real hugs, the Air Hug card and a cactus theme is perfect. Also, it’s a great way to give a homemade gift and a practical gift as well.
Cactus Juice Hand Sanitizer
We’ve had the opportunity to work with Cactus Juice and receive multiple bottles of their hand sanitizer, which are greatly needed right now! They were so sweet to send us extras and encourage us to share them with others because they have been committed to donating nursing homes, first responders, and the medical community.
The kids are loving giving away bottles to both grandmas and everyone they can think of!
This hand sanitizer, with the cute little bottle was our inspiration and helped us finally figure out a cute little gift to leave with our wonderful neighbors.
Cactus Infused Hand Sanitizer gel uses genuine Isopropyl alcohol and contains 8% more than the amount recommended by the CDC. What makes it even more special is that it contains cactus juice to condition skin. It is a very thin gel that is unscented and rubs in quickly. You know it’s doing the job!
Definitely order some for the perfect practical addition to this cute gift!
Air Hug Cactus Card
The thing that pulls this all together is the Air Hug Cactus card. It’s a cute way to send some love and make the whole cactus theme fit social distancing.
I actually created this card by hand very easily! I’m not very accomplished at drawing, so I know you can do it too!
Very simply, with a basic Sharpie marker, I started with the tall base of the cactus. Then, I built the rim of the pot around it, and used basic shapes to finish the rest of the pot. Next came the little “arms” of the cactus. I set them asymmetrical to make it easier and give it a little more character.
I think what really breathes life into this little guy is the placement of the mouth very close to the eye. Also, the little dots in the eye give a lot of character. If, like me, you color green right over the eyes and forget to leave the dots white, just use some white-out.
You can always make a similar card with a clipart cactus and adding the “Air Hug” text. Or, if you’d like, leave a comment below and I can make a printable of this one!
Painted Rock Cactus Gift
This was the most fun! Have you seen these cute little painted rock cacti and succulents going around? I’ve seen a ton on Pinterest, and you can really add your own style to them.
This is a great craft for kids because it’s very simple, but they have a lot to do.
First, they have to search and find just the right rocks. If your kids are anything like mine, rock collecting happens constantly! Next, simply paint the whole rock with solid green. You can also use different shades like we did if you have them.
At the same time, the kids could also decorate the pot with paint or leave it plain.
Once the rocks are dry, you can use paint or metallic Sharpie markers like we did to create the spikes. There are so many different ways to do this! Lines, dots, Xs, random, patterned, etc. Anything goes!
Arrange the rocks in your pot and try to get everything right where you want it using some paper filler like we did or white rocks for succulents. Our large rock did make our pot a little heavy at times, so it can also be a good idea to add another rock to the bottom/front to counterbalance the weight.

The Cactus Gift dropoff!
The kids were so excited to drop these off across the street! They had a long wait to shop for the small pot with social distancing and watching the paint dry, but finally it was time!
They anxiously ran across the street and set all the gifts on the front step. Then, they rang the bell and stood back patiently. They were so proud of what they made! They were also proud to share the hand sanitizer and the rest of the gift with our neighbors who do so much for us!
Aww what a cute little idea during a challenging time such as this. Thanks for the article, Kristin.
Thank you so much, Janie! I’m so glad you like it.
