DIY Growth Chart: Adorable {& easy!} baby shower gift

March 14, 2018

There is nothing better for a baby shower gift than to put a personal touch on it and give the parent’s to be a way to create special memories. This DIY Growth Chart does just that. It’s handmade with love and it something they will continue to use as their child grows.

The best part is that, unlike using a door frame, this DIY Growth Chart can be moved and grow right a long with the family.

It’s also very easy! Just an inexpensive board, some paint, and a stead hand with a Sharpie or paintbrush.

Last weekend, we attended a baby shower for my cousin. I wanted to give a gift that was from the heart and are things we actually used and loved with our kids.

We rounded up baby things we love – like the wipes and bottles we used, a baby blanket, a small teddy bear from the kids, IKEA dishes, some personalized labels with the family’s last name, and this very fun DIY Growth Chart.

Did I mention it was a 90s themed party? Check out what I found in some old jewelry and rocked for the night…

When our kiddos were born, I asked my dad if he could make us a Growth Chart and, as I knew it would be, it is now one of my prized possessions.

At the time the kids were born, we knew that one day we would move on to a larger house. So, we didn’t want to start tracking their height on a door frame or something that we couldn’t take with us.

My dad, being as skilled as he is, took a board with a ton of character, gave it a faux live edge, and burned the hash marks and numbers into the wood.

It’s beautiful!

I knew that was a little out of my realm of crafting abilities.

However, I knew I could tackle this project and have it turn out pretty nice.

So, the whole thing was under $3, but it looks like a million bucks and the time put in is so that this new little one will have a place to track their growth is priceless.

Directions

  1. Start 1′ off the ground – if you start at zero, you will have to compete with baseboards, different carpet thickness, etc… Starting a food off the ground means this will work wherever it’s placed.
  2. You can leave your board to go up to 7 feet or cut off a foot and end at 6 feet.
  3. Paint your board with your color of choice.
  4. Mark every inch up the board with a dot, using a tape measure.
  5. Using your square, make your lines:
    1. First, mark the  .5 inch and 1 inch hash marks with a 1.5″ line
    2. Second, mark every 3 inch inches with a 1. 25″ line
    3. Third, fill in the remaining hash marks with a 1″ line
  6. Using your Sharpie or purchased stickers or vinyl, number the 2′, 3′, 4′, 5′, and 6′ (if you go up that high) marks.

Wrapping your DIY Growth Chart

You can totally wrap this bad boy completely, but we just didn’t have that much paper.

Plus, it looks really cute sitting there in the gift pile at the shower.

Instead, we  only wrapped our other gift items. We took a remainder of the paper and wrapped a strip around the top of our DIY Growth Chart.

From the name labels we included in our gift, we used a name tag (which came with the Mabel’s Labels Baby Combo Pack) and placed one through the paper.

That’s all there is to it and you have a very personal gift that will “grow” with the family for a long time.

Do you take your kiddo’s measurements? Where do you mark them?

  1. That is one unique baby shower gift! My cousin is now pregnant and I’m currently in search of something different to give to her baby shower. Thanks for this idea. Cheers! 🙂
