Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic

December 10, 2018

We won tickets to Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic and had a mother-daughter date. We had heard good and not-so-good reviews of Disney on Ice, but it’s something we’ve been wanting to do for years.

We had a great time together! The show was entertaining, we had wonderful seats, and I somehow managed to make it out of there without a $12 Olaf snow cone! Success!

We won tickets to Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic!

For years, I’ve been saying we should take the kids to Disney on Ice. For the last few shows, I’ve started to see bloggers offer giveaways for tickets from Carrie the Moment, and I have been entering them like crazy. It finally paid off and we won two ticket vouchers from Simplicity in the Suburbs!

Our tickets were only good for the Thursday night or Friday morning performance. Our kids are in school, so we thought the Thursday night performance would be better, even though that meant the show started when we typically get the kids ready for bed. Yikes!

For weeks I wrestled between using the different discount codes to get the other two tickets early, and waiting until will-call so we could all sit together.

Kids get sick at the worst times!

Well, the decision was made for me when, the day of the show, Little Lady came down with a fever and had to stay home from school.

I was still wrestling with whether we should all go that night, because I thought a family outing would be so much fun. After her fever sticking around through the day, and talking to the rest of the family, we decided we just couldn’t make it work.

I finally felt better about it when I realized that she wouldn’t be able to go to the school the next day anyway because they have to be fever-free for 24 hours. However, after watching how these kiddos seem to get a second wind early in the morning, I knew she and I could have a girls day for the next show!

Friday came and I was happy to see she was feeling much better. Not top notch, but she was excited to go! We dressed up, got her brother on the bus, and made the drive into the cities.

Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic at the Xcel Center

I’m always happy when events are at he Xcel Center. I’m not at all a fan of city driving and parking, but it’s not too bad there. We pulled into the ramp of Kellogg, paid our $10 and made our way over to will call.

The lines were long, but with a little patience we got up to the window. I’m so glad I didn’t order 2 tickets earlier! Not only because we didn’t end up needing four, but because with our vouchers we got amazing seats! They must just give you the best seats available because we got some amazing ones right in the center and only 9 rows up!

The merchandise sold around the arena is insane! Light up toys, crowns, popcorn, caramel apples, cotton candy, etc… Of course, Little Lady asked for one of everything, but she was happy enough with the freeze dried fruit and suckers I brought. Good thing too, because I asked the person next to us what they paid for their snowcone in an Olaf cup and it was $12! That’s what I was expecting, but it’s still a little nuts!

The Show

The show started at 10:05 and the main gang – Goofy, Donald, Mickey, and Minnie – came out right away. There was no Pluto in the show, but I get it because they had some poor soul skating on hands and feet for Pumba and I can see why they wouldn’t have too many four-legged characters! The newest films – Moana, Coco, or Wreck it Ralph – were not represented in this show.

The show was very high-energy and Little Lady was enthralled the whole time. Nearly every Prince/Princess combo was represented and most had their own dances. It was definitely one of my favorite parts when all they all were on the ice together.

The skaters were amazing! The talent was really incredible. Some of the twirls, spins, and flips were very so much more advance than I expected from a kids ice show.

The first half of the show was an hour long and it flew by. Many different stories were depicted, but there was a longer focus on Dory and Frozen. I will say the Dory part of the show was just a touch long for me, but it was right at the beginning, so everyone was still excited. One of the coolest parts was that the skaters pushed a boat around during one of the numbers and some children from the audience got to ride inside!

After intermission, the show absolutely flew by in just 30 minutes, I believe! We weren’t ready for it to end. Little Lady said she wasn’t leaving, but I had to let her know nothing was happening again until 7pm that night!

Overall, we loved the experience. It was really special to see the show together and have some one-on-one time. The morning show was a much better time for us that they evening shows which start at 7pm.

What’s the best age for Disney on Ice?

It was a great length and high energy the whole time, and my 6yo was the perfect age for the show! The littler girls behind us were also very into the show and squealed the characters’ names each time they first came out.

However, we had plenty of little ones – about 4 and younger – around us that were not able to sit for the whole show. A lot of parents were heard calming their kiddos, bribing them with more snacks, or even having to scoot through the isles to take antsy children up to walk around. It’s a tough choice when you want the family to enjoy an even like this together. Our little guy went to Sesame Street Live with me when he was probably three or younger and he made it through just fine, but you just never know with little ones!

Quick tips for Disney on Ice

Know your kiddos. A lot of parents were struggling with very young children. It’s a children’s event, so no one around minds, but just know your kiddos and do whatever is easiest for you. I’m sure they’ll have an amazing time even when they’re young, but will you?

Bring a couple snacks. Now, I was a little nervous about this one because they do check your purse as you enter. However, I had a small water bottle and some little candies in my purse and it wasn’t a problem at all. I didn’t go crazy and pack a bunch of food, but I did bring one bag of freeze-dried fruit and a couple suckers and cough drops. That seemed to be enough to get us through without shelling out the big bucks on concessions.

Surprise your kiddo with a toy before the show. We all expect the items sold at these events to be crazy expensive. Purchasing a small Disney toy or light up toy before the show is a great way to save money and reduce all the, “Mom, can I have that?” You can find Mickey and Minnie ears, light up toys, small Disney characters, or costumes on Amazon.

Dress up! I mentioned costumes, and I totally recommend them! It was so cute to see all the little princesses out there. There are definitely more kids dressed up than not. Make it a real special event by doing your little one’s hair, putting on a crown, and letting them wear their dress up clothes outside of the house. It’s so cute!

We would go again!

We loved spending time together at such a fun family activity! You all know from our many posts, that we are a Disney loving family. The songs, the skating, and the scenery were amazing! We went right home to watch Aladdin and Frozen that same night. Little Lady also hasn’t stopped dressing up like princesses for the last three days!

Getting tickets

We won these two tickets from Simplicity in the Suburbs and Carrie the Moment. Carrie has all the best tickets to family-friendly events in Minnesota. I’ve been seeing her name everywhere! She is hooked up! So, if you’re local, I would absolutely recommend checking out her Facebook or Instagram pages for early discounts. You also can get some discounts from signing up for notifications from Feld Entertainment. Although the best is to enter all the giveaways Carrie the Moment sponsors and win some tickets yourself! We had the greatest time!

If you have any questions about the Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic show – the characters in the show, the items sold, the best seats – leave them in the comments below! I’m happy to answer anything!
