It’s always a struggle, isn’t it?
I love water and I consider myself a big water drinker, but I will find that a whole day has gone by and I only filled my water bottle once.
There are just too many water benefits to ignore and it’s one of the easiest healthy habits to adopt.
I figure, if I’m struggling with saying no to Chinese food and ice cream, I better at the very least drink more water!
Why drink more water
We all know drinking water is one of the most important healthy habits we can adopt.
But why exactly?
There are so many benefits!
Weight loss. Water is a great appetite suppressant and our body uses energy to warm cool water
More energy. Dehydration causes fatigue, but water carries oxygen to our muscles.
Headache cure. Dehydration is also a common source of headaches.
Digestion aid. Helps the body release toxins. The more water that goes through you, the better! 🙂
Healthy hair, skin, and nails. Our body is made up of 2/3 water which needs to be replenished often for a healthy body.
Joints and flexibility. Feeling a little stiff? Drinking more water will help keep those joints lubricated and flexible.
When to drink more water
Did you know that when you drink water makes a difference as well?
I try to get started with my water right away in the morning. This is when I’m most motivated and if I don’t do it then the day can completely get away from me and I may forget until lunch.
I love warm lemon water in the morning as well, and there are extra benefits for that.
However, I didn’t realize that certain times of the day are extra important to drink more water.
Morning. We typically wake up dehydrated. Drinking water in the morning helps to hydrate as well as clean and purify your organs after a night without.
Before Meals. Drinking water before meals helps improve the digestive process and can act as an appetite suppressant.
After a meal. It’s recommended by some to refrain from drinking water until after a meal to help the body absorb nutrients from the meal. Drinking after a meal will help the digestion process once again.
Before exercise. Make sure to are hydrated before exercise and drink during and after activity to replace water your body loses during activity.
Before a bath. Drinking water before a bath is said to lower blood pressure. The water dilutes sodium levels and helps dilate blood vessels. This is one I’ll have to read more about – I had no idea!
Before bed. Drinking water before bed will help keep you hydrated during the night. This can help to prevent stroke and heart attack.
How to drink more water
Switch it up
The absolute best way for me to remember my water more often is to get excited about it.
This happens every time I get a new water bottle.
Getting a pretty new bottle just makes it so much easier to remember. It’s fun to drink, fun to carry around, and I just plain notice it more.
My newest bottle is the Sunsella stainless steel water bottle. It’s vacuum insulated, so that and the steel keep the water colder longer. It even claims to keeps thing cold – or hot! – for 24 hours.
As I sit here drinking cold coffee, I’m thinking maybe I’m using it for the wrong thing….
You don’t have to accumulate a huge collection of water bottles, either.
I have this fun set of reusable straws that I love picking out each day just like a little accessory for my water.
Better yet, relive your childhood and grab a crazy straw!
I’ll just add this in here as well… I have used water reminders on my phone before and they’re great. Until my brain starts to just tune them out… I’ve killed countless plants with Plant Nanny and I’ve tuned out many reminder tones.
Switching it up with reminders and bottles helps keep it fresh in your mind and exciting. Once you find it isn’t working anymore, it’s time to try something new!
Keep it handy
It’s not going to do you any good to have a great new water bottle if you’re not likely to keep it with you.
Keep trying things until you find something that you can keep on-hand at all times.
For some people, a giant jug helps them judge how much water they’ve drank and see the goal. For me, I just can’t carry that around. Even my larger water bottles that don’t fit in a cup holder just aren’t going to work.
I love to have a ring or a clip on the side for easy carrying and something that will fit just about anywhere.
Keep it simple
Sure, I feel like I’m at a spa with some lemon, mint, and cucumber in my water… but the things you stick with are always going to whatever is the easiest for your lifestyle.
That doesn’t mean I haven’t pinned a bunch of amazing flavored water combinations, but I rarely find myself gathering ingredients or putting the time into adorable flavored ice cubes.
To be honest, I don’t even like that I feel like I need to devote time to cleaning a knife, cutting board, blender, ice cube tray, glass, and straw… just for water!
I do love lemon water, but eventually it starts to get a bit bitter and the glass or bottle needs a good clean to get that taste out.
I’m much more successful when I can just keep refilling the same water bottle for longer than one use.

My personal trainer daughter challenged me to drink a gallon of water a day. I was concerned about being able to function efficiently during the day after taking in all that water :-), but I’m up to about 1/2 gallon, and so far it’s not a problem. So I guess that means I need it.
I agree a good water bottle makes it easier. Like you, I’m not crazy about going to great lengths for flavored water, but I did add just one drop of peppermint essential oil to my water bottle yesterday. I enjoyed how refreshing it was.
Kay recently posted…Speckled Egg Easter Cake
Good for you!! Half gallon is so good! I have no idea how much I consume in a day, but I know I’ve been trying. 😀
I wanted to try peppermint essential oil in my water and accidentally grabbed the spearmint. I did not like it! I haven’t gotten myself to try again with the peppermint. I do like lemon water, and the time I did lemon, cucumber, and fresh mint was amazing! However, I don’t have fresh mint often and haven’t done this more than twice.
Oooh! I see you have a post with a speckled egg easter cake – I’m going to check that out!
I like your suggestion to get a new water bottle to get more excited about drinking water. My husband and I are thinking about drilling a well on our property and that’s getting me excited at drinking water too! I’ll have to bottle some up and carry it around when I go out.
That’s great! We just dug a well on a vacation property we have and it was quite an adventure!
Never knew that fact about drinking water before a bath… how very interesting. Most people I know dont like drinking water and will drink anything but. No idea how they are still alive. Thanks for the interesting read.
I didn’t know anything about that either! So crazy. Thanks so much for taking the time to read, Aaron!
