This is a quick one, but I love this idea so much I have to share it!

A few years ago, I was staying home with the kids, and just getting into blogging but not really convinced I was a blogger. At the time I was on a mission to get healthy for my kiddos and was using DietBets for accountability and incentives for making my weight loss goals. They had advertised a part-time work-from-home position and I applied. Well, I got it and had the best time in that role!

Side note: After a couple years away, I am back at WayBetter as a Community Manager in their new members-only challenges. You should check it out!

So, in order to find time for that new position, my blogging “hobby,” and to get a little break during the summer, I hired a nanny to come a couple days a week and spend some time with the kids.

Now, we have never had a babysitter for the kids. Whenever we leave them, we line up family to watch them. So, this was all new to me. Luckily, I was home most of the time, just tucked away working. However, for the times when I wasn’t there, I wanted a quick and easy way to have emergency contacts front and center when needed. Enter the Shutterfly Emergency Contacts Magnet.

Emergency Contacts Magnet: A must-have!

I was thrilled when I found the template to create a magnet to include all the important emergency contacts. I quickly added the numbers and a cute photo and put in my order. (With a “free magnet” code, of course.)

Well, since we moved about three years ago, I haven’t be able to find that emergency contacts magnet!

It’s been driving me crazy. Especially since the kiddos’ older sister is old enough to watch them now when we are gone.

I love having the emergency contacts on a magnet that I know will be clearly displayed on the refrigerator.

Why a Emergency Contacts Magnet is the way to go

I love having our emergency contacts displayed this way for so many reasons.

First, it gives me an excuse to look at this adorable picture of the kids on the fridge each day.

Second, it’s very neat and tidy. Perfect if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like to have papers all over the fridge. Or, if you do have kiddo artwork and things, this won’t get lost in the shuffle and will still stand front and center.

Third, it won’t get lost. This is a nice size magnet that will stick right to the refrigerator and never end up misplaces.

Fourth, if you order more than one like I did, you can place them in your kids’ room, at grandma and grandpas, etc.

So, I bet you’re wondering why I have an entire post about a product you can order through Shutterfly…

Well, in the years since I made the original emergency contacts magnet through Shutterfly, it’s not something they offer anymore. Womp, womp…

I have looked and looked! I couldn’t even re-order the old, saved magnet. Instead, I snagged a code for 4 free magnets and got to work on designing my own.

Don’t worry, it’s so easy!

Emergency Contacts to include

First and foremost, it’s a good idea to have Mom and Dad’s cell phone numbers on the emergency contacts magnet. Easy.

Next, at least two other family or friends to call in case of an emergency. For us, that’s my parents. I would like to have one other person to call in case they were away together, but there really isn’t anyone else.

So, at least four numbers for parents, family, or friends is a good idea. If you’re close with your neighbor, it’s a great idea to also have the phone number of a neighbor.

Then, local emergency numbers are a good idea. In addition to 911, your local fire department and police department are smart. I just had a talk with my 8-year-old the other day about when you use 911 and when you would call the police or fire department directly.

Last, we also include poison control. I feel like this one is very important. With small children, I could see needing this even more than police or fire. Hopefully not, but that’s what this emergency contacts magnet is for – to cover all the bases!

Another important tip: also include your home address at the bottom of the emergency contacts magnet. In the event of an emergency, you can’t count on your babysitter – or anyone – to have a clear enough head to remember the house number and street name. It’s just smart to have it right there with the numbers.

These emergency contacts labels from Mabel’s Labels are also a smart way to keep your emergency contacts close! Especially good if your kiddo has any allergies or medications.

How to make your Emergency Contacts Magnet

If you have any photo software, or can save something as a jpeg, you can probably make this emergency contacts magnet yourself.

I made mine in PicMonkey, which is my favorite photo software. I use it for all my photos, graphics, and collages.

If you’d like to just do this project, you can sign up for a free trial of PicMonkey to complete it!

Depending on the size of magnet you want, you’ll want to size your project accordingly. The free Shutterfly magnets were 3×5. I was a little nervous it would feel too small because I remember the other emergency contacts magnet being larger. However, it turned out to be a great size!

So, start with the same size project in your photo editing software. Then place the photo you would like on the left side. Create a text box with the emergency contacts for the right side of the magnet.

For our Emergency Contacts Magnet, I used three different PicMonkey fonts in different text boxes and added a layer that looks like a paintbrush swipe behind the text to make it stand out even more.

Once you have your Emergency Contacts Magnet as you like it, save as a jpeg or png file. Then you can use it for your photo magnet project on a site like Shutterfly.

Or, you can print it and affix it to your own magnetic sheet. You can get adhesive magnetic sheets right on Amazon. These magnetic sheets are already cut to 4 x 6, so it would be very easy to size your project to 4 x 6 and have a perfect fit.

So smart for every home!

As I said, I first created an emergency contacts magnet when the kiddos were little and I wanted the nanny to have quick access to the emergency numbers. However, as your kiddos get older, it’s wonderful to have for them as well.

Our kids are 7 and 8 now and are able to memorize our phone numbers. However, not only was it great for those years when I could teach them about the emergency contacts and where to find them, but you never know how someone will react in an emergency. A set of emergency contacts is always good to have no matter who is in the household. I have to say, I like that we have the numbers for police, fire, and poison control right on our fridge.

An emergency contacts magnet would be a fantastic gift for anyone moving into a new house or starting a family. It is also great for elderly, kids at the age to stay home by themselves, or young adults living on their own for the first time.

I can’t think of a home that would not benefit from an Emergency Contacts Magnet. It’s so handy and so reassuring.
