We have traveled quite often with kids. Our son made his first trip to the cabin at 1 week old. Both children rode from Minnesota to Florida at just 1 year and 1 month old! In the time since, they have traveled to Walt Disney World each year and to the cabin at least once a month.

One of the things that is so important for traveling with kids is to have a bag just for them and their toys. Nothing makes the journey easier than having a kids toy bag ready to keep them busy. Pack it full of favorite toys, snacks, busy items, even a special surprise. Also, having the kids involved in packing their own bag will help with the packing process and with them feeling a sense of independence.

Kids Toy Bag Essentials

Depending on the length of the trip, there are a couple things that are always good to pack in a kids toy bag.

As you saw from our trip to Walt Disney World when we all packing in one suitcase, that we kept extra clothes and pajamas in the backpack. This is a good idea for young kids because of spills or accidents. It also helps when there will be an overnight hotel stop before your destination.

However, if your trip is very short, like our 2 hour trips to the cabin, just some basic toys and distractions is about all you need. This list will help give you an idea, but some items may not be necessary for shorter trips.

Getting Kids to Pack their own Toy Bag

When kiddos are able to help with packing their own toy bag for travel it can help a lot. They love being able to help, and they just may come up with something that will keep them busy longer.

To help keep your kids from going overboard, it helps to limit the amount of space they are able to fill. You can give them one or two specific pockets to fill or limit the number of items to bring. You can also fill the bag with the most important items and let them add a few more things to the bag at the end. It’s also a smart idea to keep a couple items a surprise until the last minute, so throw those things in at the end.

MOOV travel bag

We received this Tyke Traveler diaper bag recently. I was drawn to the fantastic design and many pockets.

This bag functions really well as a diaper bag. In fact, it has reusable labels and many come pre-written for diaper bag storage. In addition, the bag unfolds and there is a diaper mat as well.

Nevertheless, the company, MOOV, has created this bag to grow with your child. In particular, many features are designed to help children become more independent and organized. There are multiple small pockets with the aforementioned labels. Therefore, kiddos will know where to put their items. Even more unique is the xCheck system which turns the X into a check mark when an item is in the pocket.

The many pockets make this an ideal bag for art supplies or small toy storage. The two insulated side pockets, shoulder straps and messenger strap, and labels are great for travel. We found it to be a little small for the kids’ large items like both tablets, books, and a doll. However, the small pockets are so good for little toys and snacks. Plus, the kids love the look of in and all the compartments.
