Veggie Straws

Is your family obsessed with Sensible Portions® Garden Veggie Straws? They definitely don’t last long in our house!

In fact, I came into the kitchen to see my husband digging in and had to yell, “stop! I need those!”

So, I bought these from Walmart only yesterday and have had to fight off everyone in the house. Including myself!

So, I knew I better get on it. The kids will love this adorable – and delicious – veggie straw Christmas tree as an after school snack!

When I make these for holiday parties this season, I now know that I need to buy two bags next time!

Better Snacking Choice

We love these for our family! Much better than the other un-healthy snacks kiddos seem to gravitate toward. At least with these, we know care has been taken with the ingredients and the way they are prepared.

Veggie Straws are a healthier snack choice- Vegan, Non-GMO, Organic,  30% less fat than chips with no artificial flavors or preservatives, Kosher have no Trans fats and no Cholesterol.

When we wish for chips, these are a better choice. In addition, the kids love them and feel like it’s a special snack.

Veggie Straw Christmas Trees

This is the easiest snack or appetizer to put together. It is definitely family-friendly and a perfect recipe for you and your kiddos to do together!

They will have a great time putting the Veggie Straws on the Christmas trees! Make many individual trees or one giant tree together. It’s the cutest holiday snack or appetizer!

Best of all, with just a few ingredients for an easy or intricate cheese ball center, these Veggie Straw Christmas Trees can be a little different each time.

Veggie Straw Christmas Tree Cheese Ball

The base of the Veggie Straw Christmas Trees is a simple cheese ball.

There are so many recipes out there for impressive and easy cheese balls. In this case, I used two very easy recipes.

Salsa Cheese Ball

This very simple salsa cheese ball is just 4 ounces of cream cheese, 1/2 cup of shredded cheese, and 2 teaspoons of a salsa seasoning blend.

We happen to have a lot of these salsa seasoning packets from a craft fair or flea market or something. They typically include onion, garlic, red pepper flakes, parsley, and cilantro. You can check Google and Pinterest to come up with a recipe with much the same flavors.

Everything Cheese Ball

Even easier is this Everything Cheese Ball with simply cream cheese and everything but the bagel seasoning.

Just mix in about 2 tsp of the seasoning mix to 4 ounces of cream cheese. That’s it! No need to do more than that! Of course you can and it would be delicious. Maybe a little bacon, or salmon, or shredded cheese, or chives…

Other Cheese Ball Recipes

As I mentioned, you can use just about any cheese ball recipe as the base and the dip for your Veggie Straw Christmas Tree. I’ve included a few that sound delicious!

Putting together your Veggie Straw Christmas Tree

With any of those recipes above, mix together your cheese ball.

If you decide to do smaller Veggie Straw trees, split your mixture into equal pieces. For reference, the trees shown, I made four trees with one block of cream cheese. For one tree, you will leave it all together.

The cheese ball mixture will need to chill a little bit to set after it is shaped. To form your cone shape you can use plastic wrap or even plastic bags.

Plastic wrap

With plastic wrap, cut a piece quite a bit larger than your cheese ball mixture. Wrap around the mixture, secure the ends by twisting, and form your cone shape. Then place it in the fridge to chill.

Sandwich bag

Using sandwich bags is also an easy way to do it. This is definitely the way I’d suggest with kids.

First, pierce a very small hole in the tip of one corner of the bag. This way, the air will be released instead of getting stuck in the tip.

Then, place your mixture to that corner and start pushing it down through the bag. Twist the rest of the bag to close. Depending on the size of your bag, this can make more of a short and swat cone for your tree. However, you can easily squeeze the shape to elongate it a little.

Once chilled, make a tree!

You can chill at least a half hour for little trees and more like an hour for larger trees. You could even chill overnight.

With a larger tree, you might want to set the cheese ball on a platform so the Veggie Straws can be put in at an angle. Something like a small overturned glass bowl would work nicely.

For smaller trees, I just place three Veggie Straws like a little raft under the cheese ball. I also break the Veggie Straws in half for placing around the smaller trees.

Then, start placing green Veggie Straws around the base of your cone at an angle and work your way up. Add a couple of the red and yellow Veggie Straws throughout for decoration.

Once you’ve made your way to the top, use a small piece of the red or yellow Veggie Straws for a tree topper.

It’s now ready to serve and start dipping!
