It took me entirely way too long to get our hanging powder room sign up on the wall. We have officially been in our home for two years and four months.
Wow…
I can’t even believe it has been that long!
One of the very first things I knew I wanted in this house is a hanging powder room sign.
I told everyone.
I wanted it in place so you can see if from the front door to the back patio door, so everyone can locate the restroom if they need it.

DIY Hanging Powder Room Sign
As with a lot of the projects I announce I want to complete, I waited so long my dad practically made the sign for me.
I am a bit of a perfectionist to the point that I am also a procrastinator because I want things done just right. Is anyone else like that?
This is one of those projects that just got the best of me. In the end, it is just better to get something done instead of waiting for it to be “perfect.”

Powder room sign hanger
I got the hanging portion at Minnesota Home Outlet. It’s our favorite place to find some great deals on home products.
A lot of the products are overstock or maybe even damaged. This hanger was broken near the top but with a little smoothing, re-drilling the screw hole, and black spray paint it’s perfect.
Any hardware or home store will likely have brackets like these. You can also easily find one on Amazon. You’ll have some luck with a few different styles if you search “hanging plant bracket.”

Powder room sign
As I looked for the wooden plaque, I noticed a lot of what you find at craft stores are not double-sided. I like the scalloped edge, but decided it wasn’t worth it when all I found were one-sided pre-cut pieces.
You can find some that are double-sided, I’m sure. However, it’s pretty simple to cut a wood oval.
That’s exactly what my dad did when he got tired of me talking about getting to the hanging powder room sign someday. He cut out the oval shape, painted it white, and even attached they eye hooks and chain for me.
You’d think I’d have had that sign up in no time after that….
Nope. The project then stalled again for weeks because I didn’t trust my handwriting skills. I had in mind a gorgeous script that read, “powder room” on both sides. So, I sat and looked at it for weeks, but couldn’t get myself to start.
Does anyone else do that?
I even missed a perfect opportunity to have our new hanging powder room sign direct guests to the restroom when we hosted a carnival wedding shower. Instead, I gave a lot of directions and we had a handwritten sign to direct people through the kitchen.
Missed opportunity, I tell ya…

Finally putting “powder room” on the sign
It wasn’t more than a week later that I found my solution.
I found some old, forgotten wall stickers laying around the house. If only I could have found those in time for the wedding shower…
I’ll admit, it’s not exactly the adorable script I had in mind. However, it is cute and finished.
Maybe someday I’ll invest in a Silhouette or Cricut and have a gorgeous vinyl script perfectly cut. Luckily, with these easy stickers anyone can do it and they can be removed if you want to change it up.
Done is better than waiting for it to be perfect anyway.
In my case this guy would have probably been unfinished for another two years. Now, it’s up and I’m loving it!
DIY Hanging Powder Room Sign
Direct your guests straight to the bathroom with this easily visible DIY hanging powder room sign.
Materials
- Hanging bracket
- 7 x 12 wood oval
- Chain
- 2 Eye Hooks
- 1 S Hook
Instructions
- Cut your own or buy a 7" x 12" oval wooden sign. (The one we cut is about 5.5" x 9.5" but 7 x 12 is a pretty standard size)
- Paint it white.
- With letter stickers, painting, or this vinyl decal write "powder room" on both sides of the sign.
- Screw in two eye hooks to the top edges of the sign about 2-4 inches from the center point.
- Attach your chain. (This set could work nice for your hook as well) We used about 8 inches, but I think 12 inches will also be fine.
- Option 1: With an S hook you may be able to just hang it over the end of your wall hanger.
- Option 2: For a little more stability, you can drill a hole where you want it to hang and place your wire or hook through the hole.
