It’s truly amazing what can be done with found materials when you have the time, talent, and imagination!

I have been meaning to show this to you guys since Christmas! I’m so in love with our DIY farmhouse bedroom furniture made by my dad. You wouldn’t believe what he can do with some old deck boards!

Backstory behind the materials of our DIY Farmhouse Bedroom Furniture

So, let’s start with that. Over 2 years ago, when we were living in our old house, we helped some neighbors demolish their deck. Fortunately, another friend of ours had moved in down the street and thought he would like the wood for bonfires. Well, it’s even more fortunate that that friend is such a slacker and never actually hauled the trailer full of boards over to his out for more than a year. When the neighbors finally dumped all the boards at the side of his garage, my parents had just purchased property and my dad was looking for reclaimed wood. He saw those boards laying outside like trash and picked them up.

You wouldn’t believe what he’s made with those old cedar deck boards! He’s already made an enormous farm table and counter tops for their place. Little did I know, we were going to enjoy some incredible furniture made from the fruits of our labor too. It’s so great when everything comes back around!

Our Bedroom

Our bedroom has been the last room to finish in our new house. We remodeled and moved in a year and a half before. The kids rooms were finished right away and the common areas were right behind them. Only our bedroom was left with our previous DIY night stands and a random cheap IKEA dresser.

Isn’t that just the way? You make everyone else’s space just right except your own. Our bedroom was last on our list of priorities and it was over a year before we finally decided we needed to get it finished.

Amazing Christmas present!

This Christmas we received the best surprise! As we walked the kids into my parents’ living room, we saw something big covered with a plastic tablecloth and a bow. As we uncovered it, we found two of the most gorgeous farmhouse nightstands!

DIY Farmhouse Night Stands

I absolutely love the gray stained top with those old deck boards. They have such character! I, of course, took the one with the most knots and dings. I can’t resist that stuff! It looks so good with the clean white of the rest of the night stand.

We have one nice-size drawer with some antique drawer pulls my dad got off some other furniture. The best part for me is the shelf under the drawer. Now I have a place to set my planner and computer as I snuggle in for bed. It’s so much nicer than placing them on the floor or the top as I used to do! Last, the baskets found at ALDI of all places, look so good and hide away a lot!

…but there is another surprise!

Just when we thought all the gifts had been opened on Christmas Eve, my parents told us to go outside. There we found the most amazing dresser with a gorgeous distressed top and sliding barn doors!

DIY Farmhouse Dresser

This thing is a show stopper! I couldn’t believe it! That same incredible gray stained deck board top with beautiful white bottom. The size of it is super impressive too! We added the same wooden crates from Menards that we used in our mudroom cubbies.

The best part is definitely the amazing barn door that my dad created himSELF! If you’ve looked into barn door hardware lately, you know how expensive it is. On Amazon these are at the low end at the time of this post, and these are how high they can be!

He made these with some strips of iron, sliding door rollers, and bolts all found at our local Menards. I got him to explain it to me and a post with the details will be coming soon!

I can’t help staring at our beautiful furniture! My dad has made something in nearly every room of our house, so I shouldn’t continue to be surprised, but he is so talented! Another amazing thing he does is make the most beautiful things out of reclaimed items.

Everything but the metal pieces on this furniture came from old projects. The Xs were created from some siding he had to cut down and this thin piece was left. The pieces at the bottom corners are molding or something he had laying around. The drawers pulls are vintage off some old furniture. I mean, it’s just such a talent to turn that stuff into something like this!
