Benefits of being silly with your kids
As parents we don’t get much time for being silly. In fact, it can sound super unappealing at times when all we want is some quiet and to cross everything off our to-do list.
However, play and being silly is so good for kids and parents! It’s been a while since we talked about the Power of Play but play is fantastic for learning, creativity, and mental health.
As parents, being silly with our kids is a great way to blow off some steam, laugh and bond with our kids, and create special moments.
5 Ways to be Silly with your Kids
It’s not always easy to find time for play and silliness. Sometimes it seems like we have to have the perfect crafts or be super creative and prepared ahead of time. Good news! These 5 ways to be silly with your kids take very little effort and anyone can do it!
Karaoke
Are your kids always singing? I laugh to myself all the time because they will both be humming during meals, burst into song during distance learning, and belt out a tune in the shower (just like Mom).
So, it’s no surprise that karaoke, or even just a super fun microphone is a favorite!
They are currently loving playing with their new karaoke microphone. They sing into it all the time and we all get a little silly with the echo and voice changing functions. It’s so much fun and the battery lasts for hours!
With a karaoke microphone and some fun lighting, a karaoke night is the perfect way to be silly with your kids! This mic even comes with an attachable disco color-changing light which we keep on as well as some color-changing lightbulbs and string lights. It sets the perfect mood for silly family fun!
Nerf War
In my experience, nothing makes a kiddo happier than springing a Nerf War on them!
This is something we started doing to lift our spirits during the pandemic and particularly stressful days of distance learning. Nothing lightens the mood and brings out the giggles like starting a Nerf fight.
I know I can count on this to turn my son’s day around. We have a bin full of Nerf guns and extra darts. I can grab this and start the attack.

Dance Party
This is something that you might do along with your karaoke party. However, we’ve been doing dance parties long before we had a fun karaoke microphone, so I had to add it!
A random dance party is the perfect way to get silly with your kids! Anytime you can pump up some music and bust a move is some guaranteed fun.
It’s also a great thing to do when there is cleaning to be done – but don’t tell your kids that. Just turn on the tunes, start grooving, and see how much easier the cleaning goes!

Dance parties can be done anytime, but a really great way to get silly with your kids is to make it something special. Just like with our karaoke moments, setting the mood is key!
We love to turn off the lights use the string lights and color-changing light bulbs (which change to music!) we mentioned before, but we also love a couple extra disco lights we have. It just makes it so much more fun! Plus, it’s really easy. A few fun disco lights are inexpensive and really fun for the kids and the whole family!
Beach Day
Being stuck at home really got us thinking of ways to make home a little more fun. One of our favorite things is to set up a beach day. It’s so much easier than you think!
In short, the kids get excited about laying out some beach towels and spending the day in their bathing suits. Of course, there’s more you can add to go above and beyond but, really, the suits and towels is nearly enough!
You can use nearly any dress up items or very easy decor and movies to make other theme days too.

Pirate Day. Dress and talk like a pirate while playing with kenetic sand and watching Peter Pan or Hook.
Princess Day. Break out the fancy dresses, classic Cinderella, Snow White, or Sleeping Beauty, and a tea party.
Super Hero Day. Get a fun set of masks or capes like these and pop in Incredibles or a Marvel movie and set up an obstacle course to rescue a stuffed animal or fight an evil villian.

Spy Missions
This is something that is so much fun! We actually had a Spy Party Birthday for our son. It was an amazing success! I have had so many people use that post for their own parties.
Spy missions aren’t just for birthday parties! There is no reason you can use some spy missions to get silly with your kids on a normal day of the week! Any one of these 9 spy missions we used could be used to make a regular day at home a little more fun!
Imagine how much the kids would love it if you blew up some black balloons and asked them to detonate the bombs to try to find the clue to what they’re having for lunch.
Or, how about setting up a sneaky book safe that they have to find and open with a code to get a special treat?
Even just a small note written with invisible ink can be so fun!
It is so much fun and can turn a whole day around! I can tell you that this is a way to be silly together that will definitely be a hit!
