Kids Creativity: Raising Creative Kids

January 3, 2019

Kids creativity is an amazing thing! Not only is it fun, but it’s teaching them valuable skills for life. We can help foster that creativity!

I am all for encouraging kiddos to be creative and express that creativity! Creative thinking is one of the best skills for life that we can help foster at an early age. With play, activities, and allowing them to express themselves we can raise innovative thinkers and problem solvers!

Why is Kids Creativity Important?

Creativity isn’t just something that is cute for childhood. Giving children a chance to explore their creativity and let their imaginations run wild is a very valuable tool for every aspect of their life!

Play and creativity teach children how to learn, how to develop critical thinking, and how to look at things from a different perspective than everyone else. Creative play allows children to develop strategies to successfully tackle novel problems.

Play

The best way we can encourage our kids to express their creativity is through play. Kids need many opportunities to play, explore, and develop their creative skills. It’s our job as parents to make sure they have a childhood full of play!

Open-Ended Play

It’s obvious that I think this is important, I’ve written two gift guides dedicated to our picks for open-ended play to inspire kids creativity. So many toys these days have so many rules and guidelines for kids to follow instead of allowing many opportunities for creative thinking.

If we, as parents, look for the opportunity to find toys and activities that provide opportunities for open-ended play, kids creativity will thrive!

Kids Creativity - creativity activities - coloring their own clothes

Clothing

One of our Little Lady’s favorite ways to express her creativity is through her clothes. She loves color and layers and accessories! Unlike her brother, no matter how many choices I set out for her for the week, she always comes up with her own ensemble.

Creating their own clothes

Recently we were introduced to the DaVinci in You DIY clothes coloring kit. Both kiddos had so much fun! Little Lady designed her own [very] colorful unicorns with the shirts provided, and Little Guy used the markers to create his own t-shirt. Such a fun family activity! The kids loved coloring their own clothes and it kept them busy and exercising their creativity for hours!

What they Wear

This is a tough one in our household. With our son, I just have a set of clothes picked out for him for the week and he doesn’t deviate from that. With our daughter, no matter how many outfits I have picked out, I have to be with her or she’ll pick out something completely different.

While still giving her choices and the opportunity to express herself, I have to steer those choices toward weather and school appropriate. However, I love her crazy sense of style!

Experiences

It’s our job as parents to make sure our kids have opportunities to express their creativity. With busy lives, kids creativity can be stifled without us even realizing it! More time in school, less time for recess, more technology (not that there isn’t creativity in that), and less open-ended play…

We need to be mindful and give the opportunity to develop these useful skills.

Encourage Play for Creative Learning

Children’s Museum

It’s been way too long since we’ve visited the Minnesota Children’s Museum, but we absolutely love all the opportunities for play and how the kids’ creativity comes out there! Our museum has taking the initiative to share the power of play with parents in the community with all sorts of tips for fostering play and creativity with #PlayMoreMN! We love it!

Get Outside

Have you seen what kids can come up with when they play outside? They find so many interesting things to do!

My kiddos build frog castles out of scraps of wood. They also make all sorts of homes and paths “in the woods” – which is really just the treeline between our yard and the road! I’m always hearing about the elaborate and creative scenarios they come up with outside and I love it!

There are so many ways we can foster kids creativity! I think a lot of it goes back to being old-school and allowing them to play and come up with things on their own.

Less toys, and more experiences and imagination.

If we can give them this, we are doing our job to raise innovative thinkers and problem-solvers.
