We are right in the middle of summer vacation. The kids have been out of school for nearly a month, and we are enjoying these long summer days!
Our kiddos are now 6 and 8, so our favorite outdoor toys for summer has changed a bit over the years. Although many have stayed the same and just gotten a little bigger.
Favorite Outdoor Toys for Young Kids
Swing Set
I love looking back at the adorable pictures of our small little kiddos when we first fixed up our swing set. We got an old swing set for free and have kept adding to it until it is the ultimate play structure for kids! When they were little we added a tire ladder that made climbing up and down a lot more fun.

Water Table
One of the things that stands out the most as one of the kids’ favorite outdoor toys was their water table. When they were young it is the perfect way to let them splash around without too much worry. Although, Little Lady did get right up in it somehow! You always have to watch around water, but a water table is so much fun!
Balance Bike
I will praise these things forever!
I think it’s the BEST way to teach young kids how to ride a bike. Instead of depending on training wheels, they learn the most important part which is balance. Balance bikes are great for the kids and parents because it allows them to be more independent. Neither one of the kids used the balance bike very long because they work so well and they were then off to a regular bike.

Ride-On Motorized Cars
From when they were very little, our kiddos have always rode around in motorized vehicles. I was juuuust a touch too old when these first came out, and I think they are so fun for kids!
We have always found our motorized cars from garage sales or the curb. Usually they need a new battery and they’re ready to go. Our kiddos have had a John Deer Gator, Jeep, and Hummer between our house, the cabin, and Grandma and Grandpa’s house. It’s just so fun to watch them have such independence. I swear my son has driven so much in his life he’s better than me!
Trampoline
The kids favorite outdoor toys have always been their trampolines. When they were little we started them out with a this cute My First Trampoline. It is, by far, the go-to item in the yard all the time.

Favorite Outdoor Toys for Older Kids
Trampoline
As the kids have gotten older, the trampoline has gotten bigger. Their trampolines have always been their all-time favorite outdoor toys. I don’t know if a day outside passes without them hopping on the trampoline. It’s such a great way to stay active and release energy. It’s also fun to watch the games they create on the trampoline. As an added bonus in the summer, we have a sprinkler attached and they love to jump with the water! The plan this summer is to add a mister system around the top of the enclosure – the kids can’t wait!
Sprinkler
With our without the trampoline, sprinklers are always a hit. Any type of sprinklers are bound to be a kid’s favorite outdoor toys. Water play just can’t be beat on a hot summer day!

Water Balloons
Water balloons are also a favorite around here. We have water balloon fillers, but the kids still can’t tie them themselves. They ask me all the time, but I hate tying water balloons! So, the best gift they received are these reusable water balloons. Whenever they ask me to fill up water balloons, I direct them toward those and they can do it themselves. Lifesaver!
We haven’t tried the as-seen-on-tv quick fill bunches of water balloons yet. Who has tried them? Are they worth it? Let me know!
Chalk
The kids have always played with sidewalk chalk… but what a mess when they were younger! As our Little Lady has gotten older she has become quite the artist and our driveway is constantly full of chalk. The most creative way the kids use chalk is to make obstacle courses on the driveway. I love that creativity! I couldn’t find a photo of that, so please enjoy this sidewalk chalk Squirtle made by the kiddo’s uncle.

Bikes & Scooters
Pretty classic. Bikes will never go out of style. Once the kids learned on their balance bikes, they were onto bigger bikes. They love to ride to parks, around the driveway, through the cul-du-sac. Until this year, bikes and scooters were the toys of choice for riding around the driveway and neighborhood.

And the biggest obsessions this year are….
Roller skates & Green Machine
This year, the kids are branching out from riding bikes. Little Lady has been learning to roller skate. I LOVE it! She looks so cute in her roller skates and it just feels so classic to me. Little Guy has upgraded his big wheel to a new Green Machine this summer. It has definitely become the favorite toy of the summer.
