It’s time!

There is nothing like the feel of the holidays. That’s the real reason people get excited and want to decorate or set the holiday mood “early.” Why limit this feeling to a few short weeks in December?

There are a few things you can do to set the holiday mood subtly in November (maybe even October) and progressively add until the Christmas feeling is in full swing!

Setting the Holiday Mood… subtly

As soon as Halloween approaches and that chill is in the air, I am already feeling the Christmas spirit. I keep it reined in until Halloween passes, but the holiday feeling is coming out subtly in November for sure!

Setting the Holiday Mood - from subtle in the Fall to all out!

Candles

My absolute favorite way to set the holiday mood even when others may say it’s too early, is to get those holiday smells in the house.

I love spiced scents for giving the house that cozy feel. Those crazy naysayers can’t complain about a warm, delicious smells permeating the house.

My newest addition to my holiday scent collection is a candle from Free Reign Farms. If you love supporting small, family-owned shops for the holidays, this is a perfect gift!

I have the Harvest scent and it couldn’t be better for me personally, and making the house feel like Christmas. They are hand-poured, made of pure soy wax, and they have a wonderful wood wick that crackles as it burns. Talk about setting the holiday mood!

Cozy Fire

As soon as the cool, Fall weather starts rolling in, our fireplace goes on. Getting cozy next to the fire is the perfect way to get all the holiday feels.

Even if you don’t have a fireplace in your house, there are some fun options to get the same feel. My husband wants us to get a large console unit with a fireplace in our bedroom, and I have to admit something like this would be nice. For something smaller, but just as cute, I love this portable electric fireplace. Even in super tiny spaces – think RVs, offices, or any bedroom in the house – you can get a little space heater with the look of a real fireplace!

Holiday Fabrics

Another thing you can do to subtly add in Christmas touches early is to use winter fabrics around the house.

In the Fall, checks, plaids, and cozy knits are all fair game. Add a thick, knit blanket to the couch. Set out some gorgeous plaids on a blanket ladder. Even throw on buffalo check table runner.

This is something I plan to do more of. At least fabric is easy to fold up and store away unlike all the bulky Christmas decorations I always want to buy!

Setting the Holiday Mood – and going all out!

Subtle is great for those Fall months, but what about when December rolls around. Time to go all out!

Outdoor Decor

We try to keep it simple outside, but there is nothing better to put you in the holiday mood. It’s easier than you think, too. You don’t have to spend forever hanging Christmas lights either.

Our favorite thing to do now is to use laser lights. They can cover your whole house in sparkling light, or even project shapes onto your front door. They are so easy, but the kids love them!

This year I finally got my matching Christmas trees and wreath for the porch and my son got his inflatable snowman, so we’re all happy!

Christmas Music

I could listen to Christmas music all year round. In fact, I used to start in August when I was younger. My husband rolls his eyes and gives me a hard time if this happens before Thanksgiving, but after that – it’s on!

Being a Christmas music connoisseur since childhood, I have some favorites.

  • Alvin and the Chipmunks – this might not be everyone’s cup of tea but every Christmas I turned on our Alvin and the Chipmunks record while we decorated and I can’t do it without it!
  • Celtic Woman Home for Christmas – they have two Christmas albums – and maybe a ‘best of’ – but this one is my favorite! The sounds are gorgeous, and there is nothing better than their rendition of Auld Lang Syne.
  • Vanessa Williams Star Bright – This was one of my first Christmas CDs and I’ve since lost it, but it’s still my favorite!
  • Mariah Carey – Even if you’re not a fan of Mariah Carey, you have to admit that this is amazing!

Lighting

Lighting is so important for setting a mood.

For the holidays, I love soft and festive lights. With the light of a cozy fire, the glow from the Christmas tree, and pretty candle light, lighting can be used in many ways for setting the holiday mood. Try some battery-operated tea lights around your holiday decor.

Christmas lights aren’t just for trees. They look wonderful wound up stairs with garland, draped over the fireplace mantle, placed on a headboard. We love the dainty wire fairy lights for adding a bit of Christmas magic all over the house.

Holiday Bedding

This is something I really never thought of doing until recently. I saw a couple people sharing their holiday bedrooms on Instagram, and now I really want to decorate the bedrooms more too!

Do you have to have neat bedrooms for that? That could be our problem. No matter. I’m now coveting all the holiday bedding. It’s so pretty and perfect for setting the holiday mood in another room when I spend the most time.

Put it all together!

Everything separately will do it’s part to set the holiday mood, but put it all together and you’re in full holiday mode. Nothing better, if you ask me!

Cozy up on the couch next to a warm fire with your buffalo check blanket and some Celtic Woman Christmas music playing. Smell the gorgeous scent of your Harvest wood wick candle, and when the lights come on outside crawl into your sumptuous holiday bedding.

Ahhh…
