Pop Up Camper Sleeping – How to sleep two kids in one bunk

July 20, 2018

Sleeping a family of four in two pop up bunks is possible. Pop Up Camper Sleeping can get more creative than you think. This is how you set up one pop up camper bunk for two children.

Don’t mess with folding down and setting up the dinette. Instead, set up the camper bunk to accommodate two children. Create a divider and make it cozy!

There is nothing better than pop up camper sleeping. They’re so open and you feel like you’re practically sleeping right in the open air.

It’s not to tough to get the best sleep of your life in those conditions.

But what happens when you have a family of four (or 5 or 6) and only two pop up bunks?

For pop up camper sleeping with more than one kid, you can always convert the dinette into a bed…

…but what if you don’t want to bother with constantly folding down and setting up your table?

We knew we didn’t want to do that each trip!

We also knew that our kiddos would never get to sleep if they were going to both sleep in the same bed. So, we had to get creative to give them each their own space.

Learn how to recover your camper cushions and check out how we updated our dinette!

Take out the mattress

While cleaning all of our curtains and cushions to get the smell out of our used camper, we made the decision to keep one mattress out of the camper.

By having one bunk without a mattress, we can put two cots in the bunk and create spaces for each kiddo.

We keep a carpet remnant covering the wood bunk, so the kiddos have a comfy floor.

Cots for the kids

Two toddler cots are a perfect fit in the smaller bunk end.

We have these Regalo cots, which also made the list for our pop up camper must haves. We have used them at hotels, the cabin, and the grandparent’s house.

They have been a lifesaver!

They’re also very easy to travel with because they fold up into a carrying bag.

By placing the cots vertically, you can use the top bar to make a divider and give each kiddo their own space.

Divide the space

When we first used this setup we used a shoe organizer to divide the spaces.

The benefits to the shoe organizer is that it’s thinner and doesn’t take up much space. The pockets are a good size for small kids clothes, flashlights, small toys, etc.

The downside is that the pockets only face one side and they usually come with metal hooks for hanging. You could easily use two shoe organizers back-to-back to face each child. Shoe organizers also are typically too long for the space, so you will have to shorten it or think of a way to tack up the extra length.

For the past couple trips, we have switched to using hanging clothes organizers.

Hanging clothes organizers take up a bit more space, but they allow each kid to have their own place to store clothes, books, toys, etc. We also like that the tops are Velcro and stay secured better.

I love the idea of these organizers that are labeled with each day of the week. They look so fun for kids and they have pockets on the side for more storage.

Placing both organizers way in the back means they only take up the space of a nightstand. They leave plenty of room for both kids to walk around and get in and out of their bunk.

Pop Up Camper Sleeping making it cozy

Getting cozy

I looove the look of the styled bedding that turn camping into glamping.

Unfortunately, we aren’t quite that fancy with our pop up camper sleeping. Our bed is made up with old bedding we no longer use on our bed at home. For the kids, we stick to sleeping bags.

When the kiddos were smaller, we used these little character slumber party sets because the kids love the characters and they’re easy to travel with because they come in a bag.

Now that they’re getting bigger we found these thin and soft green sleeping bags for $7 at IKEA. I couldn’t pass it up!

We are thinking of doing some camping in the fall, so we might have to add blankets or find some warmer sleeping bags.

  1. I had to check this out because the bunks in our camper are getting to be too small for my kids! Love the idea of the cots. I will have to see if they make them for teens…my kids are growing up so fast.

    1. We have a larger cot that looks like it will fit our little guy for a while, but it’s just slightly too long for our bunk… I bet if we really wanted to remove the piece that holds the mattress, it would work just fine though. Hopefully you find something that works for you and your growing kiddos!

  2. How did you install the carpet? And do you take out the hanging shelves every time you move or can you leave them attached when folded? We are driving across country and only staying one night at each camp site so it is going to be a lot of taking things out and packing back up.

    1. Hi Melissa!

The carpet is a remnant piece and it just lays on top of the bed. We do unpack and take down the hanging organizers each time. However, without the mattress in the bunk, it gives us much more room to just store things right there. We usually put the cots down on the dinette and place our outdoor folding table on the bunk. I suppose there is no reason you couldn’t leave them attached to the pole when you take it down. Or, if you want to leave them packed full of clothes and things, I would take them off the poll and lay them down on the floor with the open side up while you travel. That way, they stay packed and easy to hang back up.

Let me know how you work it out. I hope you have a great trip!
